It's a radioactive isotope of Phosphorus. A big beta emitter.

I AM jealous - radioactive AND explosive on contact with water.

So cool. I want some! D:

Better not let RKolter, or any other of the resident mad scientists salivate on it, then.

well it's P32 as attached to ATP, so it's not explosive on contact with water, at least it wasn't when i put the water on.

Ingenious - a biological delivery system for radioactive explosives! Now you just need an enzyme that snips the P32 off the ATP.

um.. actually a lot of things do that.. it's kinda the point, cause this way it incorporates into the DNA and radioactively labels it.

it's just that when it incorporates/clips it's as PO4 not pure P

Bah. Where's the fun in that?

Say, P32 is pretty darn radioactive - half life of 14 days or so. Just how much of that are you giving er... whomever? I'm surprised it isn't doing some substantial damage to the DNA it's incorporating into.

um... not giving to someone, mixing with known DNA to see if certain DNA binding proteins are present in various samples, and how much they are.

is kinda what i'm doing.

So... you have some P32, but it's bound to ATP and it doesn't explode in water. And you have an enzyme that snips the P32, but it does so with an oxidized form that doesn't explode in water. And you aren't actually giving it to anyone.

You have a potentially explosive, radioactive chemical and you aren't doing anything even vaguely mad-scientistlike with it.
