A pun in the can is worth two in the bush, after all...

To be candid, I think this whole thread can't hold a candle to the comic...

Just pass the decanter and be quiet. :P
(Ooo, doesn't that make you just flush with embarassment?)

When crossbows were first introduced, one person (a pope?) observed that the were such terrifying weapons that they would surely be the end of all wars.

I think that is correct, Earl, it was thought that the fire power available from the crossbow could terminate all mankind.

Of course, we've graduated to far more efficient means of killing ourselves since then. Although, I guess nukes are probably our best shot at wiping out all life on the planet.

Wow, this thread has grown to incredible proportions just on the power of non-sequitors.

Un-canny.

(have we repeated outselves yet? :P :) )

Good evening.

How do you say "a dog, a gorilla, and a kerosene lamp at the beach" in Japanese?

....wait for it...

Unkankonkingkongikinkenkankun

[un can con King Kong y quinqué en Cancún = a can(ine) with King Kong and a (kerosene) lamp in Cancún]

Okay, that only makes sense in Spanish, but you have to admit it took a lot of wit to come up with it, whoever did.

Crossbows were considered disreputable weapons and no knight would be caught dead with one of them. There were times they were even under papal edict.
Of course. A good longbowman took years to train, and had to keep in training constantly. It's been years, but I seem to recall one English king actually issuing an edict that longbowmen were to practice a certain number of hours every week, on pain of the royal wrath.

Ah. Here we go.

"Their skill was exercised under King Edward I of England (r. 1272-1307), who banned all sports but archery on Sundays to make sure English citizens practised with the longbow. As a result, the English during this period as a whole became very effective with the longbow."

Longbows had the potential for greater range and/or accuracy (though not both at the same time), but the average crossbow was simple to the point of stupidity, and any fool could use it with reasonable accuracy and damned little training.

Wikipedia (and I don't vouch for its accuracy) notes that "Although an expertly handled longbow had greater range, better accuracy (the heavy arbalest crossbow being the exception here), and faster rate of fire than an average crossbow, the value of the crossbow came in its simplicity: it could be used effectively after a week of training, while a comparable single-shot skill with a longbow could take years of practice."

A famous quote about the Colt revolver also applies to the crossbow.

"God made Man, but Colonel Colt made men equal."

And of course, equality is something the nobility tends to view nervously.

heh.

Which is why European royalty HATED the idea of personal firearms (when they still in devlopmment) on the battlefield. They thought is leveled the playing field too much.
