- Akira
- Dragonball and Dragonball Z
- Princess Mononoke
- Steamboy
- Blue Gender
- Planetes
- Grave of the Fireflies
- Anything from Studio Ghibli
- Cowboy Bebop
- Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex

I know most of these were already recommended, but I wanted to vouch for them as well. Akira, Blue Gender and Ghost in the Shell have a little bit of nudity. As does Dragonball.

also for a break from anime watch the old Looney Toon cartoons! I mean the ones from the 40's. There's some great hitler cartoons as well as some very racist stuff they did. Very shocking and a nice break from anime is what everyone needs once in a while

It's hard to find 'em, though (I've been trying to find some Clampett-McKimson stuff); especially on TV. You're better off looking for 'em on YouTube.

There are plenty of sites out there to download them, particular bittorrent sites.

Personally, I recommend Vandread or Steam Detectives. ^_^

I *ahem* have this great Disney one I that I sampled a frame from for a project that hit the back burner along time ago...

That is a great pic cat!

Hope you don't mind. It's funny how things have changed and nobody makes political animations like this anymore!

you might wanna not post it in the thing like that, the image is huge...

Anyway, if you watch the whole thing, and really think about the end symbolically of that piece, you'll get something really fun...

Der Fuehrer's Face

It turns out that it's actually avaiable for legal sale... I need to go out and buy it now. My questionably sourced copy (obtained before the short was readily available) is really of questionable quality...

EDIT++++

Something I just found out that seems interesting...
In at least one short, Mickey is out fighting at the frontlines, yet almost every war time short they have focusses around Donald Duck...

Once it's out in the U.S., I HIGHLY Recommend Black Lagoon. I've only seen a few episodes, and it's great. Otherwise...(with some repetition)...good starter animes

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic Fumouffu, particularly
Anything Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, etc)
The Cat Returns
Steamboy
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Escaflowne
Samurai7

Most of the good ones have been said. For the scifi thing, these are good...

Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Fullmetal Alchemist
Any of the "Gundam" series'
Escaflowne

You might also try "Hellsing", though the vampiric part may not go over well with the pastor.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

I'd think the relgious thing would be the bigger issue, ESPECIALLY if you're catholic...

and enjoy it?

So far the only one I've watched all the way through is Trigun. Because it's awesome. Although my friend got mega annoyed when I pointed out that everything in that was stoled from the original star wars trilogy. I mean come on. The thing is set on a desert planet with spider droids and sandcrawlers.

I also have a massive stack of Bleach and FMA to be watching, which I've had for ages but just haven't watched. Anyone think they're good enough to merit my watching time?

Give 'Now and then, here and there' a shot. It's quite the tear jerker.

Yay, cause it's my favorite! It's got some very risque humor and stuff in it, though, so I don't know how well it will go down with his dad.
