too many of one thing, not enough of another...

Post by Fishmancomics »

I bet you're all getting tired of me, but I I just got on my FTP program today (SmartFTP) and found two problems:

But first, I need to tell some things to clear everything up:

My website address is http://www.fishmancomics.com

I am the only one who uses this computer.

Yesterday, the only change I made to my site was adding a menu to the top (the buttons of which lead nowhere, because those pages haven't been made yet). Then I uploaded the changed indextemplate using my FTP program. That is all I used it for. I didn't mess with any folders or documents (with the exception of indextemplate, of course) while using my FTP program.

Okay, now for the problems:

---

1. my dailytemplate is nowhere to be found. I know it can be replaced, so it's really not that big of a problem.

2. my entire /workspace folder seems to have been copied to my /public_html folder (meaning, "now there are two seperate /workspace folders")...anything I do to one /workspace folder is reflected in the other, so they seem to be connected...which means I can't delete the duplicate one.

I tried deleting the extra one (probably not the smartest thing to do, in hindsight), and all it did was delete the /comics folder from the original /workspace folder, which I quickly fixed by adding it back.

---

Neither of these things seem to be affecting the website in any way right now, but they might in the future.

Anyway, my main concerns are:

How did these things happen?

Why did these things happen?

Were they supposed to happen?

If the second /workspace folder is not supposed to be there, how do I get rid of it without deleting the other?

Can anyone else get access to my files without my knowledge?

Thanks

The answer to this issue is below... keep reading.
2. my entire /workspace folder seems to have been copied to my /public_html folder (meaning, "now there are two seperate /workspace folders")...anything I do to one /workspace folder is reflected in the other, so they seem to be connected...which means I can't delete the duplicate one.
Covered in the FAQ I think - this is not an error, and it is not a copy. It's a link back. It's like having a front and back door to the same home. When you follow the workspace link under public_html, you are actually back in \workspace.

Don't do anything silly like delete it, because you'll delete your workspace.
I tried deleting the extra one (probably not the smartest thing to do, in hindsight), and all it did was delete the /comics folder from the original /workspace folder, which I quickly fixed by adding it back.
D'oh. I just TOLD you not to delete it. That's where your dailytemplate.html went to, by the way. You seem to have corrected your problem.

Answered these above. You did a BadThing(tm).

Administrators could, of course. But nobody else.

Phew! I'm glad nothing is messed up!

...are you sure my dailytemplate is still there? I still can't find it anywhere.

...but I guess the fact that everything is working is proof that it is still there somewhere.

I don't know how much you know about computers, but the little white square with the arrow means it's a shortcut (ie, a link to a file or folder that is actually somewhere else), so you should've known it wasn't a copy or something like that. But I've never used SmartFTP, so maybe it doesn't show up on there. Either way, now you know.

In other news: yes, this is my first post.

oh i know plenty about computers...just sometimes i get a little confused when things happen that i didn't do, and also it's better to ask questions to make sure nothing else gets messed up.

...and there are no shortcut symbols on the extra /workspace folder...but that is no longer a problem anyway.

my dailytemplate is missing though...last Thursdays comic has fallen victim to its disappearance, so now i am replacing it.

...i just hope it doesn't disappear again.

(but in case it does, i'm saving a copy of dailytemplate and indextemplate on my computer...which i should have done earlier)

Does that mean that you've been editing them directly on the server? As far as I know, you're not supposed to do that. All the editting should be done on your own computer and then uploaded to the server, so yes, you should have saved them a long time ago.
