Graphics problem

Post by Ianthealy »

Sometime over the weekend, for reasons unknown, all the graphics on my site stopped loading except for the comic itself. No logo, pics on the cast page, etc. are loading.

I did a full update on Wednesday or Thursday to fix an unrelated issue and afterward everything still checked out ok. I made no changes to the code in my index or daily templates and verified that as early as this morning and yet my graphics seem to be gone. The files are still in the [images] folder as they should be. I DID find a file that did NOT belong there - something called nosteal.jpg, but could not open it. I deleted it.

Does anyone have any ideas what might have gone wrong and how to fix it? I re-uploaded my index and daily templates this morning and scheduled another full update, but any help from those more tech savvy than me would be appreciated.

I can see your graphics just fine. Have you tried using a hard refresh? (ctrl+F5 or shift+refresh/reload.) If that's no help, check to ensure your firewall's not messing with you.

The nosteal.jpg actually does belong there; it's a 1x1 image that appears when people attempt to hotlink your images. I don't think deleting it would cause problems, though.

EDIT: Also, try not to use full updates unless you absolutely know you have to. It's processor-intensive, and anyone reading through your archives when you do it will receive a 404 error.

I'm running Mozilla 1.5.0.4 and still can't get any graphics except the comic to show up.

I checked on another computer we have running IE 6.0.29 etc. and instead of the graphics, I get the "red X boxes" instead.

The hard refresh doesn't make a difference.

What I discovered is that by disabling Norton Internet Security I was able to view the graphics. I'm not sure how to configure NIS to allow the site to be viewed (honestly, I don't know how it changed in the first place because I don't recall an update over the weekend). Anyone have any suggestions here?

It should work in theory, and that is indeed the part of Norton that is causing the trouble, but when I try to add the site as safe, Norton won't save it. Thanks for that idea - I'm narrowing down the trouble. Any further suggestions?
