Bah, screw every last one of 'em. I think a copy of the beatitudes on a scrap of paper in the pocket of every christian should replace all the bibles and crucifixes, the rest of the book is just filler. I think I remained catholic as long as I did because I learned those fairly young and didn't take in much of anything else from the bible for years, that was my be all and end all of understanding of christianity, and it served me pretty well. To some degree, they still do, without all the mention of god and heaven. I think I might turn a blind eye to the use of public resources for religious display if it were something more along those lines.

Rabbi Akiva said "Love your fellow as yourself. This is the whole of the Torah. The rest is commentary."

That is my touchstone for Jews. The Beatitudes are my acid test for Christians. If that isn't their starting point and conclusion they took a wrong turn somewhere along the road. Fred Phelps? If Jesus ever does look through our CVs old Fred will be doing breaststroke in the Lake of Fire for a long, long time. He doesn't seem to have room in his heart for anything except hate.

a fairly large number of Rabbis have attributed that one to a substantially larger number of Rabbis, actually, although frequently these same rabbis have been attributed such sayings as "If you give a man a shekel, he still can't even buy a decent meal, so don't pat yourself on the back."
