Truly. I'm also glad that you people can somewhat in peace get the surgery, and not get very much odd looks. Though, I haven't in IRRRL met a transgender... person, at least knowingly.

Also, I'm glad our schoolbooks treat homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism as natural parts of some people, not, eg. mental illnesses. I don't know how the situation is in America. Some gringo want to educate on me how this is treated in your schoolbooks (usually predating the collapse of Soviet Union. Sigh... soviet union, good times...)

Generally speaking as I was comming through school they simply weren't mentioned.

At all.

What tiny fraction of sex education we had was pretty well limited to purely scientific knowledge of pregnancy(ie: it started when the sperm hit the vaginal canal, everything that led up to that and surrounding it was taboo, even knowedge of STD's).

Things like Transgender issues, homosexual relationships, and other issues that were deemed "controversial" simply didn't make any appearence in our texts. I don't know how it is now...

If you go on to med school or something in psychology they go into greater detail.
As for highschool you'er lucky in the states if they talk to you about anything besides abstinence.

Dan Savage, writer of "Savage Love", keeps touching upon the concept of Straight Rights, along with the whole of Gay Rights, in the U.S. the lack of which keep scaring me more and more. First the plan to teach 'abstinece only' sex-ed programs to today's youth, then the restrictions placed on the Morning After Pill.... it sends shivers up my back.

I am proud of my pre-marital sex.

my high-school was pretty liberal about it, in that the teacher wasn't fired for answering the question with "I'm not allowed ot answer that question, but books by this person, this person, or this person will."

while the community college i went to for awhile was subsantially more liberal, solely because the students forced them to be, sicne the biggest student union group was the artists and writers group... we even outnumbered the deranged feminazis, which is rare for southern california, let alone UC Behind Levitz.
