I am dropping a Spanish phrase in my next comic. I have forgotten all my high school Spanish. Is this correct conjugation of someone expressing surprise?

You'll want to say "Que es este?" then it's correct.

The punctuation is missing at the beginning of those sentences, I believe.

Correct. Upside down exclamation mark at the start of the 1st sentence, upside down question mark at the start of the 2nd.

But he asked for the conjugation, so thats what I corrected

Its just that it the word has a double translation, much like you can say "Which piece of pie do you want?" and "What piece of pie do you want?". Its a matter of sounding right.

Just to set it straight since I just confused myself

Cual - Which, eg "Cual es?" Which one is it

Que - What, eg "Que es?" What is this

Cual = which, Que with an accent on the e = what?
Este would be used for a person.
Choosing esto or esta depends on whether what you're referring to is male or female, if it's unknown, probably go with esto.
Don't forget your inverted exclamation and question marks. And the accent on "Que?"
