You know I cannot help but think of Grogans War Surplus, Hardware & Gun Enporium out of the Patrick McMannus books when I read this strip...

If Max is anything like Grogan, Quintyn will not leave without buying more than the gondola will carry..

He already unloaded a bunch of junk on Quentyn once before, no doubt he'll try again, but this time Quentyn's sober. Max might find it harder this time.

But I wonder what idea Max has for getting the stuff back. Probably trading the artifacts for other magic junk that looks impressive but doesn't do anything, or will run out of lux quickly.

And Ralph should consider actually selling some of those Quentyn plushies. I would totally buy at least two. One for me, and one for my sister. HE'S SO CUTE!!!

Interesting. Seeing Quentyn with the plushies reminds me of another confrontation with shopkeepers and their novelties. One person complained that the doll of him wasn't anatomicaly correct in six ways and was highly insulted by it all. Of course the station commander was very tolerant about the situation until he was handed a Bearbalon 5 plushie with JS monogrammed on it. He spaced the poor Teddy!

You never heard of the minions of Meeko? For a Disney bit player he sure has a lot of fans. Of course I suspect some of their intentions are not honorable.

But my research thus far, the outlay would be absolutely gruesome.

Max wants to help...fleece the humans of everything they own. Quentyn may need help baragning but not Max's help.

And i want a Quentyn plushy. Is there anything about liscense infringment? Shouldn't Quentyn be getting some of the plushy profits? Did Max get permission for those reproductions?

Would you be willing to share with us what's gruesome? How many preorders would you have to have in hand before you'd go for a 500 unit minimum order?

Max is quite a salesman -- but apparantly an honest one. After Quentyn took careful inventory of what he bought in his drunken spending spree, he came to the conclusion that he'd actually gotten decent value for his money. Max had just convinced him to spend (in his state of "diminished capacity") more than he would have, sober.

Max probably purposely set up this little chat today so that quent would trade him the royalties on quentyn plushies for free goods and merchandise for barter

I think it would depend on how fast the preorders came in, how expensive the individual dolls were, etc. I'm not going to pretend to be Ralph and scare up a quote on false pretenses. This thing has an 8-12 week lead time. If I had 400 preorders in a week, I'd get 1000 in order to lower my cost per unit and make more profit and provide a goody for the 400 preorders. Different variations of customer behavior would mean different behavior on my part. I'm sure that they'd be more than happy to increase the run and lower the price as orders came in during the lead time.

You're correct; all I was trying to do was take an estimated guess based upon my limited information. A friend once tried to do much the same thing with school-logo frisbees, with an order of 200. To the best of my knowledge, the campus bookstore ended up buying most of them, which was the only reason my friend turned a profit.

I wrote to JMS about that.

My mother was dying of pancreatic cancer when that episode aired on TBS. It was inoperable and incurable, and she'd come home to die with family.

Mom collected teddy bears, and disliked sci-fi. She couldn't understand why I had such a passion for it.

But that one afternoon, she told me to go ahead and turn on the TV, as she knew it was on, and didn't want me to miss it just because I was spending the day with her.

She hadn't laughed in a long time - the pain had reached the point where even straight morphine wasn't holding it back.

Yet, when she saw those bears, particularly the little one who was spaced at the end of the episode, she began to laugh and didn't stop.

For the rest of that week, I was able to make her laugh and smile simply by picking up one of her own bears and waving it through the air as a reminder of the episode.

She died shortly afterwards.

Much later, I was able to contact JMS, thanks to the help of everyone on the USENET group who forwarded my mail to him.

Oddly enough, HE thanked ME, when it was so important that I thank him.
