What's Your Connection?

Post by Glarryg »

So I'm doing a little research, and I'm wondering what kind of Internet service folks here have (dial-up, DSL, cable, etc.). I'd poll this, but I want to hear your rationale for choosing your type and possible what you had before it. I, for example, am a dial-up man, mostly for the cost and because I spend relatively little time on the Internet, so another service isn't worth it for me. (My dad, on the other hand, has a cable modem because his office pays for it.)

All I'm looking for is a sentence of two. Thanks in advance.

Cable broadband at home - I've got around 2mb download and 384k upload. Chosen because DSL only goes as far as across the street; I'm literally a dozen or so meters too far to be included. I hate my cable company, but it's either this or dialup...

We have Roadrunner cable at work from Time-Warner. At home, it's DSL from Alltel, which worked fine until my year probational period ended and they jacked up the price by around $40 a month.

500 kb/s unlimited from Videotron (Although it can jump up to 700 kb/s).
Upload sucks ass, though. If my roommate runs uTorrent he lags the internet terribly when he gets leeched. Otherwise both of us can play FPS games with little to no ping at the same time.

Wait... There are still people out there who don't get to measure their up and down speed in Mb/s?

I'm so sorry.

Cable.

I chose this because I cannot have Bell Sympatico DSL without paying for another phone line because my landlord has it. I tried using a wireless card, but the connection almost never worked.

I have cable.

I use it because uhhh, well it was the first broadband available in my smallish town. There have been thoughts of possibly changing over to DSL offered by the phone company as the local cable company is garbage and run by arseholes.

2Mbit/s adsl at home. Here in halls the speed is 1Mbit (the connection is capable of faster speeds but it's throttled, it does mean I get a constant 1Mbit though). Next year I'm on cable and get to choose from speeds up to 10Mbit.

For all you fine folks with dialup, perhaps you'd like to use the button in my sig? Or if that's not to your taste, McDuffies made a good one too. :)
