Actually, there's a limit for the Archivists' Guild, as well: The contract specifically states that the titled successor of Quentyn of Ridgedale may complete the quest. It says nothing about further successors, who would thereafter be succeeding Quentyn of Freeman Downs. Likewise, if a Questor dies on the job, the land is not returned; it is accepted as the price of his life, his wergeld as it were.Catherine_Puce wrote:Maybe it's because I'm a student in law but I see the usable loophole... It says: HIS TITLED SUCCESSOR were legally accountable for the contract. It's mean that as long Quentyn accept to continue the mission, Freeman Downs stay reserved for the payment. If Quentyn success, he gain the town as a payment. If he dies in trying the contract stay in wait under an another questor is named. At least that there are a limit of time, he can repeat eternally. There are no limit of time because Freeman Downs will be already take back if this was the case. So, as long Quentyn is ready to sacrifice himself to his town, the lawyers can't take the town.
La loi est toujours une arme à double tranchant.![]()
S.P.P.
(In addition, now that they're aware of the contract, the people of Freeman Downs would be unlikely to ever name another Questor, for fear of having to deal with this situation.)
Quentyn is in the classic hero's position: He can take on an impossible quest (by his reckoning), thus saving his hometown; or he can do nothing and watch as the seven villages lose a village, the people of his hometown scattered to the winds.
In addition, keep in mind that there's technically no law against a Questor exiting the Mistwall. It's supposed to keep out humans, not Rac Cona Daimh. It's not illegal... just insane. <rimshot> Sirius-ly, Quentyn is both allowed and capable to exit the Mistwall; neither his capture nor his death would provide any means for humans to penetrate it, except in cases such as Ennias Longscript's fluke entry.
(Yes, capable. This is Luxcraft, not masonry. Just as a candle-burst can be directed, so can an effect which hedges out outsiders. Think of it as a massive "Magic Circle of Protection from Humans" spell, if you'll furgive a D20 reference. At least, for Quentyn's sake, I hope it's that discriminating... otherwise, he'll be trapped on the outside of the Mistwall furever.)
Yours truly,
The wolfish,
