Boobs Ahoy! --MATURE CONTENT

Post by Captainclover »

A couple of lesbian pirates sail the highseas having comedic adventures and kidnapping women for their own dirty purposes... with lots of jokes thrown in.

Warning: Not safe for work or minors!

http://boobsahoy.comicgenesis.com

Mostly slapstick comedy that centers around dirty jokes. I realize it won't be everyones cup of tea, but I'm a perv, what can I say?
I'm just beginning to get the first story arc under way. I think I'm most interested in some well meaning criticism. I feel the most content with the pages when I color them on the computer, but I just don't have time to (things will be better after I graduate from college in june..but right now, my plate is just too full to spend 5 hours per page coloring and doing it all twice a week.) So lately I've been experimenting with other methods and I think I like the penciling so far. But I'd of course like input...

Random background information: this comic is based upon myself and my best friend. "Wilhelm's Comic" is where I'm going to put Lynn's comics (she's also an artist) as soon as I can get around to it. She won't update as often as I will but will just throw up random comics as she thinks of them... kind of like a little bonus.

COMING SOON: a forum, romance and more boobs!

I can't believe no one commented!!! This comic is so hilarious. I'm surprised there aren't more lesbian pirate fans out there. ;)

whoa! revived from the dead...

well, we had only been kickin it for a few months when i posted this... *shrugs* but things are going remarkably better these days.

the offer still stands though... i'm always looking for criticism so if anyone would like to point out a few things i could improve on (or a few things you do like), that'd be great. you too kesu, if you like. :)

my only request is that you make sure you take a look at my newer comics as i belive i've gotten a bit better than i was when i drew the first ones... lol. oh, that and i plan on continuing the color as long as humanly possible.

Although the concept seemed hackneyed (me and pirates don't get on) I must say I was very pleasantly suprised. I'm very much taken with this comic, the irreverent (and filthy) humour make for very good reading. Keep tightening the artwork and you'll have something deliciously marketable. Bookmarked.

P.S: Wilhelm before you smoothed out her hair looked a lot like Mike from my comic. Great minds fantasise alike.

I know this isn't the critique forum, so you can disregard this if you like, but here is my observation and I think it's pretty important. For a site called boobies ahoy, there is a surprising lack of body curves. I don't mean this to sound too harsh, but when I saw the current picture on the main page, I thought those two were guys. It was only after I read the names at the bottom and noticed that the little black rectangle was meant to suggest a bra, that I realized they were female. Your characters are very blocky and flat, and that makes them look more masculine than feminine. In the recent updates, the only page I saw that showed boobs (or a character that looked feminine) was this one and I'm thinking you must have had a model of some sort (which is good - you should do it more. It makes for good practice.)

no offense taken whatsoever. i had never even thought of this possibility, but it's interesting to me.

i can see why you'd think wilhelm would be a man... she's a butch lesbian, can't really make her any girlier or it will defy her character. *shrugs* just character design, i guess. it's kind of a running joke that she gets mistaken for a man... because the girl she's based on does. clover does the exact same thing just a few pages into the comic.

kind of surprised me you thought clover was a guy too though... but maybe it shouldn't surprise me THAT much seeing as i designed her without boobs. the main characters are based on myself and my best friend... and i'm not so sad to say that i really have no boobs to speak of. but i'm still a girl, lol. i guess i just wanted to have all sorts of body types, seeing as clover was based on myself if i had given her big boobs it would be like saying i'm not proud of my body type and furthering the image that any girls with an A cup should feel inadequate.

i'm guessing that you're not a lesbian(which obviously make up the majority of my fanbase)... i don't know if this is specific to lesbians or what, but i've actually received a lot of praise on that aspect of my characters. from the info i've received, a lot of girls prefer a handful than double Ds. however, i like boobs of all shapes and sizes (so nothing against anyone with DDs), i just wish that people were happy with what they were born with. it's sad to me that people actually get breast augmentation surgery to feel better about themselves. so whether my readers can tell or not, this is the reasoning behind my character design.

but aside from all that, i do have captain lala... who has very large boobs (because the person she's based off does). *shrugs*

i really respect your opinion though, so thanks for that. i hope this cleared up some of my thought process though. as far as hips and body curves... i'll agree that's something i need to work on. so thanks :)

oh also though, i actually didn't use a reference for that picture. i just spent time on it... heh. there's a difference, no?

Cartoons are a form of visual shorthand. They use symbols that are supposed to be easily recognized by the reader; even if the symbols don't really resemble the actual item, they're supposed to be recognizeable as such.

Cartoonists exaggerate aspects of the human body (and other objects) in order to create funny and/or visually interesting images; a cartoon character's nose is often bigger than his hands. The reader, however, accepts this as normal in a cartoon (because the reader has seen similar distortions in scores of other carttons), and doesn't question it.

Readers are conditioned to expect cartoon women to be busty, with slender waists and ample hips, and long, shapely legs, unless the woman is not supposed to be attractive, in which case she usually ends up looking almost exactly like the male characters in the strip, except with breasts.

With this in mind, the difficulty of portraying a "butch" woman in a comic strip becomes obvious: she is going to be lacking all the symbols comic strip readers are conditioned to expect comic strip women to have, and are therefore going to think she is a man.

You have two choices: "girl" her up a little, or accept that readers are going to be confused. The former need not be as much of a compromise as it sounds (because you could do it with subtlety), but I think the latter is the better choice.

My feeling is that the people who will become fans of your strip will do so REGARDLESS of the gender of the lead characters. I can't see someone getting 15-20 strips into your archive, finally figuring out that Wilhelm is a woman, and saying, "Oh, well screw THIS--I thought it was a GUY! This strip sucks!" Naaahhh. They're going to get into the strip if they like your type of humor; having one or two characters whose gender is not immediately recognizeable isn't gonna force the issue one way or the other.

On an unrelated note, I was wondering if you were familiar with the work of S. Clay Wilson? He was one of the artists whose work appeared in Zap Comics, an underground comic book from the 60's (it was still being published sporadically into the 90's at least). Anyway, he liked pirates too, and his pirates were almost always gay or lesbian or bisexual. Not sure if you can find his stuff on the Web, but you might wanna Google him and see what comes up. You might like it.

i'll put some thought into it. perhaps she could use some subtle girlification. my readers are definitely used to changing character styles, lol.
i'm having trouble thinking of anything that wouldn't be too over the top though... aside from maybe some slight lip coloring or something. i'm not too worried about it because it's obvious from the first few pages of my comic that she's a girl, but the readers that don't get that far might be confused...

and nope, never heard of him but i will definitely check him out. sounds interesting... thanks!

Very nice work. Humor is very fast pace. The comic delivers what it promices. Defently going on my favorites and can't wait to see more.

Not bad!

OK! On the subject of boobs...

http://boobsahoy.comicgenesis.com/d/20060810.html

That was actually a pretty good boob drawing. Notice that the side of the breast protrudes from the torso. This is the #1 thing someone will look for to identify gender. Earlier comics, especially with clover, lack this to a degree.

For example:

http://boobsahoy.comicgenesis.com/d/20060707.html

Notice that not only do her boobs not extend outside her torso (they should do so ever so slightly) but there isn't even a hint in the clothing that they exist. Hence, it's easy to confuse her gender.

Look at this:

http://www.kc-store-fixtures.com/images/torso-forms.jpg

The female in this sculpture is fairly average, however notice that at the 3/4 view the breast should be quite visible. This is lacking in alot of clover's drawings. You don't have to overinflate her if you don't want to, but you should make an effort to "highlight" her better attributes. A few simple alterations in how you draw the clothing fold over her chest should be fine.

In any case, I am thus far quite amused and impressed with the improvement in the art thus far. Keep it up!

Remember! Better drawn boobs=Readers!
