Golden Crystals (How to ask for Link-age)

Post by Goldencrystals »

Ok, I really didn't post here to pitch, more of a question really
What is the proper etiquette on linking other comics to your site and asking others to link to yours?
+ I mean, if I wanted to link a comic to my page, do I have to ask the author permission, or do I just slap it on?
+ And do I have to wait for others to deem my comic worthy of a link, or do I go around like a whore asking for linkage? lol

The vast majority won't require you to ask permission to link their comics. As long as you aren't hotlinking banners, then just assume it's fine to link 'em without asking.
+ And do I have to wait for others to deem my comic worthy of a link, or do I go around like a whore asking for linkage? lol
You should lean far more towards the former.

Link to the comics you like...when you do send them an email telling them you did and suggest they link you back. It's their decision whether they do or not, although most people who aren't really popular will do it for you as long as you don't totally suck. More popular comics tend to be a little more selective about who they link.

On linking to other comics: I can't imagine why any comic author wouldn't appreciate a little extra traffic, so asking permissions seems rather moot, but if you feel better if you asked first, go right ahead.

On other people linking to you: Don't ask. If you're active in the community and have a good comic, people will link to you on their own.

Don't forget: fanart is usually a good way to get a reciprocal link back to your site.

Asking for links is usually kind of taboo. It signals desperation, among other things. As Cortland said, it's best to become active in the community, and get your name out with a little advertising. Comic authors who find your comic may like it. If so, they just may link it.

What excellent advice! Yes, I was thinking along these general lines of linking then just shooting the author a note saying they are linked to me. I don't think I could even ask anybody to link me out of the blue, that seems a little rude, lol
Thanks a lot !!!!!!!!

A double use of the note to author to alert them of your linkage:
Stick your link in your email sig. They might check it out, and like it.

The best way to get your comic linked, I'd say, is to build up a good number of a HIGH quality. Not 100 shitty ones, 50 excellent ones. Then just ask whoever to check it out, and if they like it, to please share it.

I don't mind getting asked for linkage. Do the rest of you all really hate it or something?

Actually... yes. It's kind of presumptuous and puts you in a bad spot. What if you don't want to return the favor because the person asking does a comic titled "RACIST CLIP ART FINAL FANTASY SEVEN" or "CHRONIC THE HEADHOG*"?

It's like a stranger running up to you on the street and shouting "DO YOU THINK I SUCK? WELL, DO YOU?" You may not want to answer and they may not want to hear the answer.

* (typo intentional because some jerk stole the idea for chronic the hedgehog from me but that's okay because we can do more gay jokes now. GET IT? HEADHOG?)

I see it as a little presumptuous...or at least a little desperate for attention, yes.

I don't think I have to worry about being asked for links though...if they want a share of 60 odd readers a day there's bigger fish than me to catch.

I would totally link to CHRONIC THE HEADHOG. I picture a large ugly pig that keeps jumping on old ladies with pretty hats and trying to consume their brains. Also, the pig is on drugs. He may or may not collect rings.

Hm. I guess I never had a problem with telling people they suck.

That you have not, blackaby. It's why we love you.

I make it a personal policy to only link sites that I read. If someone were to ask for a link, I'd read through their comic and decide if I like it enough to bookmark it. If not, I'd have to flash a "I don't do link exchanges" policy at them. Thankfully, I've only had to do that once; I sometimes have trouble with disappointing others.

If someone is asking me to link them whom I do not know, chances are that someone will not get linked...unless the comic is good.
