New Character Style...

Post by Kris X »

I'm currently working on a new style for Muse and have drawn the main character in a new style (seen in #01). #02 is the old style. Which do you think looks better? I can't really decide.

The first style looks more natural; the second is more stiff and less professional-looking.

I could see either one, depending upon the character. The first one looks like a depressed cynic who doesn't get enough sleep, and the second one looks like a gamer who doesn't get enough sleep. So, whichever fits best.

The truth is out there. I think it's following me.

The only things worth taking seriously are the ones that aren't important enough to joke about.

One is better, seems more human while still stylized. Number two would need extra work to balance the blocky bits and feeling of life.

Well, I'm taking note mostly of the lines (clearer in #1) and the shoulders (they look rigid and unnatural in #2).

i like 2 -- more cartoony and has a nice mix of masculinity and softness.

I'll be honest; either would be good if you just make #2's shoulders the same as #1. That's the main sticking point. The shoulders of #2 just look wrong.

Follow up on this. I decided a slight combination of the two...But more of an emphasis on #01.

Uhhhh...style-wise they look basically the same. The new one is just a bit more polished and solid looking. It's more an evolution of the same style as opposed to an all new one.

Reminds me of 2-D from The Gorillaz. If you haven't already, why not take note of that kind of style and take what you like from it, discarding what you don't and make something new?

That's what I was thinking!

I like #1 better. The shoulders are relaxed and he's not so stiff looking, but it seems that everyone is commenting on the shoulders, so I'll move on. I like the jaw line better in #2 however, that rigidity (I think I made that up) look good, and adds edge I think
