Fear the Evil.

Post by Shishio »

Perhaps you remember that when I first registered here, I made a thread asking about where to hire an artist for a webcomic, and what a fair amount to pay them would be.

In that thread, a number of you suggested that I would be better off to illustrate my webcomic myself, and that "it isn't that hard to learn how to draw".

I know this probably comes off as sounding really snarky, but it's not meant to be. (Well, only a little, since "it isn't that hard to learn how to draw" is a statement I disagree with very strongly. It may be true for some people, but it certainly isn't for me. I spent years practicing drawing, by the way.)

Of course, I could have said all of this then, but I didn't have any proof of my lack of ability on hand. Now I do.

I should warn you that the link I have included will direct you to the most horrible thing you have ever seen, and that gazing upon such evil may cause blindness, insanity, and explosive diarrhea among other things, and that by clicking the link you state that you have read my warning, but have chosen to ignore it at your own peril, and that you waive all rights to sue or otherwise prosecute me.

Look. If you dare.

I will say that his style has some very solid underlying structures to it, and it completely lacks any kind of polish. Get a can of brasso and start workin it.

It is hard to learn to draw- but most things in life that are worth doing are.

Escushion: I am not expecting to instantly gain artistic talent. As I said in the first post, I practiced drawing for years. (And any improvement I made, was so minor it was almost insignificant.)

Jackhass: You're right, I'm not. But oddly enough, had I tried, it probably would have turned out even worse. They're only layouts to give the artist I am working with an idea of what I'm trying to convey with my scripts.

Princess: That is what I'm trying to prove.

The Snoo's right. This is solid. It could use some detail work, but you've got a good start.

And frankly, I've seen much worse here on Comic Genesis.

Yeah, drawing well takes years and years and years. A couple months isn't going to do much. But I stand by the fact that, if you stick with it long enough, it gets REALLY satisfying. You look back on your old stuff and think "I can't believe I used to draw like that!" It's a good feeling, knowing your hard work is paying off.

A key to improvement is feedback. Ask for critiques. And use sources to learn to draw realistically. Doodling alone won't do it unless you have someone to point out mistakes.

Yeah, I've seen much, much worse with no regard to just how bad the art is. The fact that you have a basic notion of composition says more than you think it does. Keep working, and you'll eventually get better. An important thing to do is to get comfortable with your work; once you reach that point, improving will be easier (and, to an extent, unconscious).

Yeah, seriously -- at least your comic isn't catboys the size of five screen-widths, the way so much of the crap on CG is.

Also, this is an irritating cry for attention, and I'm not sure why I'm responding to it.

It's easy! 12 year old school girls do it all the time! All you need is tracing paper and a popular comic with a catboy in it and off you go!
I'm glad 90's style forum signatures don't exist anymore.
