The first book, On a Pale Horse dealt with the Incarnation of Death (the other Incarnations, one each to the other six books, were Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil, and Good).
Essentially, Death was an office held by a mortal (who became immortal as long as he was wearing the symbols of his office) who only really needed to appear at someone's death to free their soul when said soul was very close to a balance of good and evil (thanks to the concept of original sin, this often included babies) as most souls didn't need any help finding their way to their appropriate places for eternity. Death appeared as the classic Grim Reaper thanks to his magic, impenetrable cloak, gloves, and boots and used his hands to yank souls out of dying bodies rather than the swithblade scythe which was more useful as a weapon. One got to be Death by killing the previous officeholder (which only happened through carelessness on the predecessor's part) and was unkillable for a grace period while he learned his job (he was unkillable because he was still balanced between good and evil; ergo, his soul had to be collected by Death and since he was Death, he'd have to collect his own soul, which really was kind of paradoxical).
By the way, "Incarnations of Immortality" is also not for everyone (less so than "Jack") as there are a number of adult situations, especially when one gets to book four and on.
------------------

I wouldn't have thought you were a horrible
person until you described exactly what it
was that made you laugh. Maybe it was the
surprise of seeing Jack, maybe it was the
irony, maybe you thought I'd done a wonky job
of depicting the afterlife, I dunno. Doing
the comic is a real kick for me, very often
it's more of a learning experience to see what
the reader's reactions are than anything else.

The younger Avariss grew up in the shadow of
his father, and put up with everything the
family name brought with it until he couldn't
stand it any more. The elder Avariss did try
to bring up his son (some ways being the right
ways, most being the wrong ways) and he does
want his son back, but on *his* terms.

I could use the excuse that he was like the Seven Seals and the Seven Harbringers from the manga X because they at first gave the illusion that at least three or four of the members had choices in whether to get involved or not, but that doesn't work, since the main tagline of the entire series is "Their destiny was foreordained"

The way these three troublemakers worked, they
were primarily made bolder than normal by the
corporate blessing of Michael A. to undertake
their plot. But it would not have taken much
to get them to cause some trouble on their
own. That's what I hoped to evince in their
behavior, their almost cult-like hatred of
furry society as something to be attacked, at
the cost of their own lives if necessary. It
isn't easy to pay someone to be suicidal...
but if that someone is already consumed with
the madness of hate, it might only have taken
Avariss' blessing (and the dissemenation of
the word that they had given their lives in
the pursuit of 'human purity') for them to
have eagerly done what they did.
quote:

(Hey, I read the first of those, too)
I sort of see Jack as a facilitator of souls
once they no longer have their living host to
inhabit; i.e. the holder of the job title
'Death' so to speak. Since it's been made
clear in the time/space continuum of the
world upon which Furriston, Bridgeway, etc.
are found that the soul does go on after the
body dies, the position Jack holds might be
held by different beings over a period of
time, just as in the Piers Anthony books. But
Jack, as Pepe envisions him, is dead on the
money. (pun intended)
