Actually, after seeing pictures of the raging protestors upset over the depictions of Muhammed in cartoon format, I have to wonder just HOW deep the virulence of religious extremism runs.

One pic showing protestors outside a Danish embassy had slogans like:

EUROPE IS THE CANCER, ISLAM IS THE CURE
SLAY THOSE WHO SPEAK AGAINST ISLAM
DENMARK SHOULD PRAY, DESTRUCTION IS ON THE WAY

These people are not just upset --- they're literally screaming for blood and war.

The Arabic cultural decision tree has a branch at every junction that says 'make disastrously stupid move' and they seem to take it every time it turns up. The crazy Muslims are going to wake Europe up to their danger too soon for their purposes - they aren't big on free speech over there the way we are in the US, but they'll notice this as a problem.

Me, I don't head for the editorial pages for subtle humor anyway. But I did like the one the other day in the Toledo Blade. An Muslim is shouting to the sky, "I'm offended by cartoons depicting Mohammed!" And a voice from the sky is shouting back, "I'm offended by radical Muslims who depict me as supporting suicide bombers!"

Hardly. Perhaps the Cold war could count as WW3, but I doubt it.

WW1 was between European powers, and wasn't really a world war except for the detail that some of the participants were worldwide empires. WW2 was against the Fascists. WW3 was against the Communists, and yes, it mostly stayed cold. WW4 is the current dustup against the Islamofascists.

The US is three for three so far. I have no worries about the fourth contest either.

To be fair to most muslims, most of Muslim society is fairly pro western and pro-modernisation. However, the sad truth of the fact is that the majority of Muslim states that are any sort of credible threat to the US or our allies are either Fundamentalist Theocracies (Consider Iran) or run by fundamentalist sympathetic groups, like the Taliban (TaliBan Deodorant: Strong enough for a camel, made for an asshole), and their citizens are used as tools to further their own agendas (Consider the example of a Union which uses its members to lobby votes). It's not Islam that should be eliminated as a whole, because we would be hypocrites in the sense that we would be denying others the right to chose their religion. Rather, we should help set up legitimate governments in the Mid-East. However, that could financially break us as a country.

"Most of?" Where is this mythical "most of" that I keep hearing about?

You mean in America, maybe? I hate to break it to you but even if 100% of the Muslims in America were pro-western (they're not), that's less than 3/5 of one percent of the world muslim population. Of COURSE the Islamics in America are peaceful. They're frigging outnumbered!

Every nation where you have muslims, you have honor killings, "death to america/kill the jew" sermons (I'm looking at YOU, Farrakhan), and anti-western rhetoric. And, STATISTICAL FACT, wherever the population percentage of Islamics has risen over 10%, that rhetoric has turned into violent DEEDS.

There are 18 theatres of conflict--- places where the gunfire is high enough to count as a military conflict--- active in the world right now. Fourteen of them involve Muslims. Muslims versus, well, whoever else happens to be there that isn't Muslim. There is a virulent slave trade coursing through africa and the mideast, run by Muslims. A war of extermination is being waged in the Sudan against christians and pagans--- again, by muslims.

Beheadings: muslims. Brutal mistreatment of women: muslims. Honor killings: Muslims. Vicious hatred and slander and murderous attacks on jews: muslims. 9-11: Muslims. Subway bombings: Muslims. Death threats: Muslims. "Cultural" gang-rapes: muslims. Riots in the street over frigging CARTOONS: muslims.

Tell me, do we have your permission to conclude after 1,400 years of murder, rape, brutality and genocide that began with the very FOUNDER of the religion, that there is something wrong with ISLAM?

Before I go on, I would like to state for the record that I happen to be a confirmed Catholic as well as the Membership Director of the UCSC College Republicans.
That being said, there is nothing wrong, per se, with Islam as a religion. I personally do not agree with neither the teachings, but I have no qualms about people who do. What IS wrong are people who abuse their faith and use it as an excuse to wage and commit theft,rape, murder, and heinous acts of terrorism.
