Any stage show. Any single one. Phantom of the Opera (original cast recording), Aida, Lion King, Rent, Wicked, Chess, Chicago....

I love 'em all!
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

No. Get the origional cast recording, preferably the two CD set with most of the dialoge. Sarah Brightman is the definitive Christine, and her vocal range makes Emma Rossum look like a mono-tone. The "Ah"s at the end of "Phantom of the Opera" are awe inspiring. Nothing against Emma Rossum and the movie soundtrack, but it really can't compete.
Hmm, I disagree. ^_^;

Having listened a lot to both the movie soundtrack and the original recordings, I actually prefer the movie version. Why? Well, Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are without doubt more crafted singers, I give you that. Two things though: They both have, well, opera voices. And I, personally, never really liked the opera. Mostly, I just don't like Sarah Brightman's voice - can't explain why, just my personal taste. Second, though more experienced singers, I find that the movie cast sings with much more emotion than the original cast. (Maybe because they're actors?) Emma Rossum's voice holds more of Christine's fragility, youthfulness and fear than Sarah Brightman's. The phantom's voice (his name escapes my mind just now), though less crafted, conveys more agression, passion and darkness than Michael Crawford's. In my very humble opinion.

I can totally understand people who prefer the original recordings; like I said, they are better singers when it comes to craft and experience. (Though I believe some people simply prefer the original because it's, well, "sacred" for them; I'm not saying you're doing this, just a general observation.) But emotionally, the movie recordings are more appealing and touching to me and personally, I like Emma Rossum's voice better.

One album? ONE? You're killing me. :( It would be easier if I could, you know, burn one album with my all-time-favourite songs instead. >_>

If I absolutely HAD to choose, I'd go for a best of / essentials double CD of one of my favourite artists of course. Maybe Bob Dylan. I'd like to choose a Jack Johnson album, but he doesn't have a best of album yet and I couldn't possibly choose just one.

I fail at this thread. :/

This topic is a trap! A trap, I say! Ain't never gonna be a singular album for my life, unless it's a mix CD that I compiled myself and is probably several volumes in size. Maybe, MAYBE, I could narrow it down to a top 12 or something, but never just one.

However, right now, and for months now, my favorite album is Gorillaz Demon Days. That's just a good, solid album. Plus, it's a fictional band constructed by the Blur guy and the Tank Girl guy, and how can we go wrong with Britpop and indie comics?

Now, this is odd. I google'd "Matthiew W. Smith" and came up completely empty. Sure this album isn't just some wonderful dream? :D

Best album ever? That's a tough one. I've got so many. Well, if I were to pick one, I'd have to say The Beatles "1"

If I were trapped on a desert island, I'd want 'How to Escape From a Desert Island' by MacGuyver.

My tastes change, and my favorite album changes with it. Right now I'm infatuated with 'Megaman Rock Opera' by The Protomen.

But an album with longevity...hmmn. I'd have to go with Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'.

The 'Hellsing' OST.
Though there are plenty of musical soundtracks that could also be given good argument. :)
'Spamalot', anyone?

If I had to make a choice, it would depend on how I feel at the moment, what I've been listening to lately and many other things. If I had to pick one thing to listen to the rest of my life, I'd probably pick Radiohead's "Bands" because it contains many songs I love and it's easy to listen all through, but there are many better albums of that particular band that work better as a concept and not just as collection of songs.

On second opinion...
I decide to cheat and pick a double album: Bowie's "Outside". It has some good writing, some great production moments where you just have to sit and listen, a concept that I can get my brain bussy with and then, I can always play other albums with guitar but that one - no use.

On the third thought, when I think about that, I don't think it's the greatest album of all times. It is one of my favourites but it's not even remotely one of the greatest.
The greatest album has to be really influential and acclaimed... I suppose being creators of pop music, Beatles should get that title. So it'd probably be "Revolver", being the first of it's kind, or, a little less likely, "Rubber Soul" or "Sgt. Pepper".
But then again, maybe their early steps are more important? Maybe "Hard days night", or even "Please please me"?

But then again, what about Bowie's earlier albums, or Frank Zappa, or Doors or Elvis or Bach...

I am confused now.

I dunno.... :-?

I like way to many bands, so I'll say my top 3:
1. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
2. Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
3. Chara - Strange Fruits
