Quotes about Seasons and Elements

Post by Mvmarcz »

If you've noticed and you may have. I'm using the elemental dancers I did to make a 2006 calendar. I'd like to put quotes about the season, winter spring summer and fall, and the elements, water air fire and earth, into the calendar. I am having no luck searching so I thought I'd ask you guys :) You usually are quite helpful.

"I hate wearing a skirt in the damn cold"

"DAMMIT! Why is it raining in California? God really must hate liberals..."
You know, i should work on this.

Never used it myself. I only picked it up recently and haven't needed to yet.

I don't understand how people can be depressed in the winter. In no other season do you get to cover yesterday's dirt and grime with a new blanket of pure white every morning.

Denial is not falsification. You can't avoid a fact just because you don't like it.

Ah, well, in some places what happens is that the air is filled with horizontal icewater and yesterday's dirt gets pounded into mud.

Or the snow gets all pollutiony from cars.

"now is the winter of our discontent"?

"let me compare thee to a summer's day..."?

that's all i got for now... I might have to come up with some of my own.

Emily Dickinson is my favorite poet, and I'm pretty sure she did poems for every occassion, including the seasons.

For Earth, for example:

The Mountain sat upon the Plain
In his tremendous Chair --
His observation omnifold,
His inquest, everywhere --

The Seasons played around his knees
Like Children round a sire --
Grandfather of the Days is He
Of Dawn, the Ancestor --

I like this one for Fire:

It makes no difference abroad --
The Seasons -- fit -- the same --
The Mornings blossom into Noons --
And split their Pods of Flame --

Wild flowers -- kindle in the Woods --
The Brooks slam -- all the Day --
No Black bird bates his Banjo --
For passing Calvary --

Auto da Fe -- and Judgment --
Are nothing to the Bee --
His separation from His Rose --
To Him -- sums Misery --

And Air:

The duties of the Wind are few,
To cast the ships, at Sea,
Establish March, the Floods escort,
And usher Liberty.

The pleasures of the Wind are broad,
To dwell Extent among,
Remain, or wander,
Speculate, or Forests entertain.

The kinsmen of the Wind are Peaks
Azof -- the Equinox,
Also with Bird and Asteroid
A bowing intercourse.

The limitations of the Wind
Do he exist, or die,
Too wise he seems for Wakelessness,
However, know not i.

Here is a good poetry search site. Try 'Dickinson' and any other term you like, she probably has a poem for it in there. :)

(*Note that Dickinson was Victorian, so searches for 'porn' probably won't give any results.)

Here's another Dickenson:
There's a certain slant of light,
On winter afternoons,
That oppresses, like the weight
Of Cathedral tunes.
Bill Watterson said:
?I like these cold, gray winter days. Days like these let you savor a bad mood.?
Willy Blake:
?In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.?
Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy:
?Too bad Lassie didn't know how to ice skate, because then if she was in Holland on vacation in winter and someone said "Lassie, go skate for help," she could do it.?

and finally a zen proverb on spring:
?Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes, and the grass grows by itself?

I think it was "Speak to the Earth and it shall teach thee." Somewhere in the book of Job, saw it on another nature calendar once.
