bumps in readership?

Post by Alschroeder »

I was pleasantly surprised to see my comic had twice as many visits yesterday than usual for an update day. I can't really see anything in the stats that explains it...have you ever experienced these odd bumps in readership, for no discernible reason?---Al

possible that someone linked you, if you arent seeing people being redirected from a search or from a site, then its likely said person didnt actually make the link a hotlink, just mentioned you by name or by address.

I get werid spikes in both directions for no apparent reason. Sometimes my comic is poison, and sometimes it's the happeneing place to be.

Look at your referrals. That happened to me earlier this week, and it turned out Joe England had linked me cuz I put one of his characters into my comic randomly.

Very occasionally, yes. Usually it seems to be because I get the happy coincidence of a new link somewhere (never on big comics, alas, but thanks to the odd little feller who puts me up) coinciding with my monthly readers dropping by again.

Then it usually drops back to about 30-40 a day again.

10/31 and 11/1 were huge days, over twice as many readers as usual. Though it's dropped down from there, the general daily intake is still higher than usual. If this keeps up, November 05 will be the best month my comic's ever had (which is especially good since September 05 was the worst.)

I've been receiving some nice spikes recently. I think webcomics are just back in season or something.

That might have had something to do with the fact that the Webaliser logs were acting up something awful in September.

I've had quite the opposite reaction, I had a boom in October but I'm deep in a dip now. Maybe it's cause I don't have time to roam the boards like I used to.

My overall totals jumped quite a bit last month, and so far are holding steady at the same level. Although from day to day they fluxuate wildly.

I suspect my totals increase when I stick to my main plotlines more closely, and avoid wandering off into sidetracks, as I sometimes tend to do..

It takes a spike of a couple thousand extra readers before the bump will get noticed on a day-by-day basis with my strip. Since I publish only once a week I generally tend to review the total traffic a comic gernated over a week and plot it against previous weeks. Of course there's been a slow steady perpetual increase in traffic since week one but some weeks will see a big spike usually due to either someone posting a link to my comic in a relevant comments thread for an article posted on Fark or Slashdot or a comic strip will resonate with a lot of readers and they all post it to their livejournals in a "then she told two friends and so on, and so on" kind of snowball.

Yeah, Halloween granted me an extra 80 visits or so. I think that was mostly due to having 9 "cameos" that day, so Hogan's Crossover/Cameo site ushered in a good deal of traffic.

I finally listed meself on thewebcomiclist.com (via the CG control panel) a few days ago... over the weekend. Come monday, (when I update) I got a a... 300% increase in visits, according to webalizer.

But I think I know why at least. Mysterious dips I usually attribute to webalizer acting up, mysterious rises to good karma.

I got a slight bump from cracking the top ten on a voting list this past week, but haven't really noticed a lot of movement either way.
