Maybe this is one of those hangups that other people have that I just don't get, like being so afraid of spiders you'll leave the room if you know there's one in there - but why would the fact that someone *else* was drawing hentai of your characters stop *you* drawing them?

I think it was more "These characters are MINE and I don't want them to ever be in hentai, so if you ever think of them in a hentai situation, your desperate love for my art will stop you from drawing it!"

I personally like MegaTokyo; I'd call myself a non-rabid fan. I don't browse the forums there, but I have the comic bookmarked.

I haven't personally seen Fred's exhortations for people not to draw his characters in hentai, but I can believe that he's made them. And no, I wouldn't consider this to be in any way under his control. If it's anything more than a bluff, then yeah, I wouldn't think as much of him.

Even so, I can still see that the kid has issues (kid being used in the loose sense: he's older than I am).

A "blood orgy"? o_o; I can't really imagine what that is all about, unless you write a vampire comic ...

As for Megatokyo; I rather like that comic myself. I doubt the strength of that threat, though, since the books are on the shelves by now and Piro probably has some form of contractual obligation to eventually finish the series. I can understand his dislike of people using his characters in ways he doesn't approve of, though. Not much he can do about it, but I can appreciate it.

But if I had half a million dollars that I didn't otherwise have to worry about, and wasn't morally obligated to donate to better causes, etc. etc., I'd gladly offer it to Fred in exchange for releasing the MT universe under Creative Commons.

Creating a popular(?) piece of internet culture and then telling people "don't draw pr0n of my stuff" is like Honor posting a link to a shock site in a forum and putting in big bold letters "DON'T CLICK THIS" on it.

Anyone who's survived 3rd grade recess ought to know that's the equivalent of a double-dog-dare to some people out there. Seriously.

And even though Megatokyo is probably buried within my bookmarked links somewhere, it's clustered among 2-300 other comics that didn't get pared down to the 20 or so of my regular rotation.
About the only reason I am made aware that Megatokyo continues to exist is because of such foolish comments and Ghastly's taking them up on the challenge.
Unless it's a geurilla marketing tactic to try to make me wonder what's so special about Megatokyo, it's pretty bad to think a veiled threat will stop people on the internet from doing dumb things.

Since megatokyo is supposedly so big, I wonder how much yaoi porn needs to be created of it in order for it to actually be taken offline?
I'm thinking a LOT, especially if megatokyo is actually making money.

First, Fred just said He didn't want porn drawn of his characters, and he would likely take down the site if he felt they were being exploited by artists who didn't respect that. Mind you, this was before Megatokyo became, for all intents and purposes, his sole moneymaking endeavour.

Yes, he makes money of of MT. Quite a bit from the store, royalties from the books, advertising, etc.

Ok, he's got other projects he's working on, and developing other stories to draw, but for now he's basically supporting himself with MT, so there's really no chance of him closing down the site.

That said, I think it's important not to be too cavalier with another person's characters. I mean, it's different than something like, for instance, Love Hina, where the artist is a former dirty Dojin artist(as are his helper artists) and his characters are naked or half clothed approximately30% of the manga.

Fred respects his characters(not that Akamatsu dosen't), BUT Fred dosen't like the idea of them being used as sexual objects. I can respect that. It's not even HIM that's so up in arms over it, it's his fans who're so rabid and zealous that they'll tear to pieces(electronically, bit whoop) anyone who interfers, or appears to want to interfere with thier comic.

He's mentioned before, quite some time ago in one of his comic rants, that he'd prefer there not be eroticised versions of his characters, and he hasn't really said much else about it, except saying something in one the forum threads that got started from some overzealous fan grabbing one of Ghastlys images, posting a link(which, likely, 90% of the readerbase at the time would never have known about or found) and going "Oh my god, THIS GUY*pointing at Ghastly* is going to get MY comic shut down", and of course completely editing thier participation in the exercise out, assuming, as the pricks always do, that they are the Good Guys(tm).

His comments, at the time, were(as far as I remember) "Yes I'm aware. No I don't like it. So?" (though I'm not privy to any corespondance that make have taken place between Uncle G and Fred).

Me, I've been a reader of both comics since before the whole thing got started(I began Megatokyo with the "L33t naked skills" comic, and I was on Ghastly the day after the First strip with the Ascii Bunnies. I knew about the first strip a full week before the first "zOMG LOOK!" thread got started), and I have to look at it like this.

In the end, is it worth it to get something taken away that brings joy to some assholes just to shut them up? Maybe.

Is it worth it to, basically, fuck up the livelyhood of an average guy with a nice drawing talent just to perform the above. No, not really.

You know, just as a little side note, the more blather I hear about this MT, which I've only ever once or twice seen artwork from, and never in the form of a storyboard. (Except of course from their delightful appearances in GGC) the more I'm convinced that I have absolutley no interest in increasing my MegaTokyo IQ. And the fan drivel makes me dream of warm anuerysims in the sun.

What can he do? Nada I suppose, *sigh* the cruel and dual-edged nature of fame....

I wasn't advocating the self-destruction of Megatokyo in any manner, as it's existance (or lack thereof) makes no difference in my life whatsoever aside from the rare Ghastly mock-comic about it. I have better uses for my meager drawing talents than to attempt such a thing.
Just posing a hypothetical question along the lines of "Who would Bush appoint as V.P. if Cheney gets indicted for massive fraud involved with Haliburton government contracts" or "How may people would really care if knee-jerk reactionist campaign promises raised solely to get votes from the Jesus crowd are never carried through?"
As with the above, I expect there to be some hot air, but no actual action to come about from 'threats' to Megatokyo's future.
