Waist high goodness

Post by Rocknjosie »

Hi all!
I've been working on my comic, Waist High, for alittle over a month now. The sites pretty boring at the moment, but I feel like I'm starting to get into a grove artistically. Anyhow, if you like cartoons about kidnergardners, I think I've got something right up your alley.

One quick suggestion: make it larger, I had to strain my eyes a bit to read it. But then again maybe it's just that I'm tired right now

Nah, I think it could stand to be a little larger too. Alright otherwise, and I have to sleep right now...I've been awake for about 23 hours now.

it was funny for the most part, so there's a plus, but i would suggest getting rid of those double pages (one with the comic uncolored, the next with the same comic colored) just leave the colored one. You may also want to make it a tad bigger, but i could still read it, oh and also try a nice font verses handwriting (is that handwriting?) cause some parts were a lil tough to make out.

All in all, it isn't a half bad comic. :)
Check out my comic ^_^

Hey, in this strip - http://waisthigh.comicgenesis.com/d/20050929.html - you have one of the kids tell the other to 'bugger off'.

You do know that buggery is anal sex, right? It may sound cute but it's an English swear-word. Just FYI.

I like the way the kids have their own little perspectives on everyday things, it's the sort of humour I enjoy about kids. Some of the strips could do with a little spit and polish, but the core is definitely in there. Like the rest of them, make them a little bigger, and don't be afraid to rescan a strip if your first attempt has that grey smear across it.

Oh, and yeah, bugger's a swear word...sort of...

Let the little buggers use it though. Most people know it's a light hearted, endearing moniker anyway.

I use it teaching in the classroom from time to time.

Tell a lie...regularly.

Cheers.

I did know bugger was a swear word, but that was kind of the whole point, a child using a word they don't know the meaning of but know it's used in certain situations. And I have started using a computer font instead of my own handwriting, everything from about two weeks ago on uses a different technique and tools. Thanks so much for the kind words everyone :)

edit. Also, I'm using a screen resolution of 1024x768, which is what I think most people have. If you have a higher screen resolution that might explain the tinyness.

Just as long as you're aware. It's just that I see a lot of instances of Americans using the word bugger flippantly when it actually has much coarser connotations. You need to live in Yorkshire for at least five years before you can earn the right to use the word bugger.

Bugger off! It's not just a national word of Yorkshire, my friend! :)

(See, I mentioned Yorkshire, not England. I heard that Yorkshiremen consider themselves from Yorkshire first, and England a distant second. I like Yorkshiremen!)

I hope everyone understands, this is a kindergardener. She probably picked it up from Eddie Izard or Monty Python, and seeing as how she's an american kid her parents wouldn't know to reprimand her, allowing it to slip into her vocabulary.

Hey, I understand competely. There are some things that really annoy my countrymen and one of them is people using the word bugger in ignorance. As you have not used it in ignorance, that is fine.

Although, while we're exploring that tangent, it really annoys me when Americans pronounce it 'York-shire', instead of 'Yorksher'. That's true of any shire in England by the way.

Nice to see we have some would-be-Dalesmen around here, Dutch. You're right, the people of Yorkshire would like to make it an independent country. Of course, what would be the capital? Leeds? York? Bradford?

By the way, the strip is great, Rocknjosie, but it just doesn't feel the same without the beagle.

 It took me until I was about 15 to find out it meant sodomize- It's definately one of the low-key swears- I think it's because it's a fun word to say.

That campaign was very popular down here too- for a while you could get t-shirts with "bugger" on them!

It's nice to see my mother tongue being neutered like this. At least our other swearwords, mainly those beginning with 'f', have kept their power.

Sad when people just starting out are talked into using fonts. Your comic looked much better handwritten. You just needed to make it more legible. Ah well.

*picks herself off floor* yeahduff I love 8:1 so much!!!! girls that actually look like normal girls. And the story. And the everything. I'm so honored that you like my comic. I'll try my hand at handwriting again, I'm just afraid of my text being illegible to the point of deturing readers.

You are too kind. But thank you.

Legibility is an issue. Some of your scans are very blurry at the edges, and you need to do something about that. If you get something that looks like this you need to rescan it. As for your lettering, just keep doing it and you'll eventually understand what you need to do so people can read it. Try making the letters a little bigger and taking your time. If you prefer a font, don't let me stop you, but I feel your comic has a strong simple handmade feel to it that clashes with computer fonts. So it's up to you. Also, if you like color, go right ahead and use it, but it isn't necessary. Your simple black and white stuff works well with the subject matter. It worked for Peanuts. If you do use color, I suggest sticking to flat areas as opposed to gradients.

I switched back to handwriting the dialogue, I'd appreciate some feedback on my handwriting versus using a font, I think I like it better handwritten, but if anyone thinks it's illegible it'd be good to know.
