I used to code MUD landscapes, monsters, and the like way back when. But I'm not part of any MUD now.

I keep considering hosting a MUD, but no. Not on any.

Ditto, though it was more MUSHes than MUDs for me. I once logged into one years after having stopped and I remember thinking . o O (This is soooooo archaic)

Really? Heh.

I was one of the wizards on TinyCWRU. Been a wizard on a lot of mushes. Wrote my own MUSE code - although the original site (FlatEarth and FlatEarth II) are down, a bunch of sites still use FEmuse code or adaptations from it.

Gah! MUD!

Must.. resist..
I was so addicted at one point I was playing MUD through telnet at school - hooray for computer-illiterate teachers, who thought I was just dicking around in notepad..

I'd like to put together my own MUD. Just because.

Sweet.
Now if I could only figure out how to make one, I'd be set :D

There's plenty of books on the subject. Also looks like there's lots of people here you could ask.

yeah. That is surprising. Wouldn't hosting a MUD be like horribly hard?

I never played a MUD. I'm a still recovering chat-RPG addict. And I can't believe how much time I wasted doing that. Especially when there were no dice involved.

I prefer the lack of dice in roleplaying, myself. But I too am spoiled by MMORPGs.

It's a lot easier to pick up girls in a tavern if you get to decide what you look like. And by decide I mean type descriptively. None of this avatar.gif roleplay chat. *scoffs in Sortelli's general scoff-locus*

Silly head, I do get to choose what my avatar looks like. Every girl's crazy for a sharp dressed slimy eyeball squid monster.

That's true and I've seen it. I didn't mean you weren't able to choose your avatar. It was just a general value judgement of textual chat roleplaying vs "value-added" textual chat roleplaying with little avatar thingies. For some reason I was associating you with the latter.

I'll take a look around for some different MUD sources, though if you have a particular flavour you prefer let me know. I'll probably set up Diku MUD, if only because it was the most popular at the time that I was playing :)

My only request: You MUST create the box :)

It's actually amazingly simple. A posix compliant box, a c compiler, and a static IP is about all you need. Oh, and some imagination. :)
