How to change your site over to the new ComicGenesis site

Postby Netpoet on Wed Jul 20, 2005 9:08 am

Since I've helped a few people already with this, I figured I'd put up a quick how-to on how to change your site over to the new name.

First of all, you *DO* have your entire site already on your harddrive, yes? If not, log in with your FTP software of choice and download *ALL* of the html pages. You do not need to worry about any images or their locations at this point.

If you don't have it already, download NoteTab Light from http://www.notetab.com/ and install and run it. Edit: if you have a mac, you could try http://tacosw.com/index.php if you have OS X or check this page for other editors http://www.utoronto.ca/webdocs/HTMLdocs ... itors.html

Click to open a file, and open *ALL* of your html pages at once (which is why I LURVE NoteTab Light). Click the "Search" tab and choose "Replace."

In the menu that appears, simply replace keenspace with comicgenesis. Be sure to click the box to the left of "Close" that says "Scope: all documents" and click replace. That will replace the keenspace indicators in EVERY ONE of your url's with the correct one.

Click "File" and "Save all" and close notetab.

Login to the Keenspace site admin and you'll see a note that says "Edit URL". Change the url from this screen to the comicgenesis site that's listed.

Log back in with your FTP of choice and reupload all the html pages to your workspace and close the FTP.

Run a full update.

You're done. :D Takes about 3-5 minutes at best unless you're on dialup (then the download/upload can take longer, of course).

... oh crap, that's right, it's Win only. Er...

{goes to see if he can find a similiar program for macs}

Edit: apparently it'll work on Macs running Virtual PC, but still...

Edit 2: found a few possibilities, I've modified the first post.

Most any text editor will handle the *.html files. They're all written in plain text. I wouldn't be suprized if SimpleText will handle it in MacOS 9, but I would look for a free BBedit clone.

Unix (Linux/FreeBSD/MacOS X) who have Perl installed can just use this:
<code>perl -pi.bak -e 's/\.keenspace\.com/\.comicgen\.com/ig;' <I>filename</i></code>

None of this is necessary unless you're using the word "Keenspace" in text all over on your site. If it's the links you're changing, autokeen will do that automatically.

I'm not entirely sure if this is because I have a domain, but in http://siteadmin.keenspace.com I have a link:

Edit URL (currently http://www.faubcomic.com)

This lets me choose from:
faubcomic.com
toonspace.com
webcomicspace.com
comicgen.com
comicgenesis.com
keenspace.com

Currently, they all work and will forward to faubcomic.com. The day after I PMed Kisai about the new domain, my site stopped working because all the links had changed to faubcomic.com... days before the DNS had propogated enough to make the links work. You could see my front page, but none of the archives worked. I didn't need to do anything with the links. It just happened.

I'm just going to wait for an official announcement on what to do from Keenspace, if that's alright with you.

This reminds me: Will domain holders need to change their nameservers at some point? (seeing as the current ones are NS3.KEENSPACE.COM & NS4.KEENSPACE.COM)

Is it necessary to do this? Will the Keenspace domain expire, or will it become a redirect to ComicGenesis, and if so when? Or can we continue to be Keenspace?

For non-Windows users:

Install Windows.

Now, deinstall Windows and reinstall your previous OS.

MAC users should sell their Macs to buy PC and then after the work is done, sell PC and buy back their Mac.

Image Problems

Postby Obeydrx on Wed Jul 20, 2005 6:17 pm

I have a slightly different problem. It has nothing to do with changing links.

You see, I decided to give my comicgen.com site a looksee to see if it was alright. I assume it's supposed to be a picture-perfect copy of the keenspace one. But, for some odd reason, only the comic images are showing up! None of the other site images, even the navigation buttons are appearing! I've checked the folders on my comicgen account and everything is there, so what do you think could be the matter?

For some reason, some of the redirects are causing things to count as hotlinking and thus screwing up a bunch of the pages.

Ah, I see! I certainly hope this all sorts itself out neatly before everyone moves over to the new server.

I don't think I'm following too well...if we change the name to Comic Genesis all our links will change automatically? Will this effect the Keenspace tags? @_@

If I don't change, does that mean my website will have broken images? It seems like my website is still viewable.
