If I'm not mistaken, to turn off auto-keen, you need to log-in at http://www.keenspace.com and click on "Edit comicname".
No, it's not necessary; if you use dreamweaver to automatically regenerate ALL your pages whenever you edit and generate the links among them, you can just upload those and you'll be fine.
However, I would reccomend using "indextemplate.html" in workspace, overwriting it with whatever your main page would be and using autokeen to generate the index.html file in /public_html/, just because of all the dire warnings about messing around in /public_html/
Still, if you just dreamweaver your site and upload directly to /public_html/ and opt not to use autokeen, just be sure you don't want to use it as it may not work right when you're done.
I'd suggest playing with autokeen a bit though, just so you know what it's like; worst case you have a little experience with something, best case you end up liking it.
In summary: No, you don't have to use autokeen. Just be sure you don't want to before doing your own thing.

He means put your comics in /public_html/comics (I think); I believe autokeen checks websites and anything with less than 3 comics is subject to deletion.... something like that.
/workspace/comics is for placing comics before using autokeen to run an update, at which point the comics are moved from /workspace/comics to /public_html/comics.

It can't really be overstated that this is a bad idea... however that's my opinion, you can do as you like.
Check the rules thread and read it very carefully, especially regarding keeping the current ad code on your site.

It's not as difficult to use Dreamweaver WITH keentags as it is to use it without them.

You could probably put ***advertisement*** in a .txt file with nothing else and use autokeen to generate that, then include the .txt file into the top of your dreamweaver pages; that way, you wouldn't have to run your dreamweavered pages through autokeen....
