Update problems

The only thing I had uploaded until now was the sample comic, which I wanted to get rid of. I deleted the picture file from public_html/comics and put the new comic into workspace/comics as usual, but when I did a manual update, there was no comic and the date in the title was December 0 with no year. The new file remained in workspace/comics

Worried that I screwed something up by deleting the only comic without uploading a new one first, I reuploaded the one I deleted right back into public_html/comics. I also put up a slightly changed version of indextemplate.html just to test if updates were going through. After another manual update, the comic came back and the new html file was being used, but the new comic was still in workspace/comics

Tried uploading the new comic directly to public_html/comics and the image disappeared again. Deleted it and we're back to the old comic being shown (manual updates between these changes). Taking advice from gear.keenspace.com, I deleted the old comic and its page under /d. There was also a file under /d for the new comic even though the image still hadn't moved from workspace. Deleted that as well.

So now there's no trace of the original comic, but the new one still won't move to where it should, RSS file still shows stuff about the old comic, and I'm back to no image being shown. Did I screw something up, or is it keenspace? Thanks in advance.

Never upload in the public file. Work in workspace section. Then manually update. As for the other information. Let me get back to you on that. We'll help ya, these forumees are good people.

You don't think I messed something up permanently by doing stuff in public_html do you? I know sometimes the admins have to personally do something to fix it but I think that's only if you deleted a whole folder or something.

If all you did was delete the sample image from your public_html/images folder, you should be fine; I did the same thing in an effort to get rid of my sample image.

However, I couldn't seem to get rid of it; the first page in my archive shows the first comic and the sample (which were the same).

Now, in my archive, the sample comic that I provided when I signed up is dated 2005 02 28 and named haloparty.20050228.jpg (haloparty=my comic name); the "first" comic, which I uploaded to /workspace/comics is simply 20050228.jpg They display on the first page of my archive as 20050228.jpg above the sample... (both images show)

Why's that important?

If you do not want the sample you provided to show up, and deleting it seems to screw things up, try this:

Find your sample image filename. Now, rename whatever you want to replace it with TO THAT NAME and upload it OVER the sample you provided (in public_html/images [oh noes!!!11! messing in public_html!1!11!]). With nothing new and nothing deleted, keenspace should display your first comic as the sample. THEN just use keenspace normally, putting any further comics in the /workspace/comics.

I just tested this on my keenspace account; replaced the comicname.YYYYMMDD.jpg with an identically-named different picture and it replaced it without a hitch.

BUT! When I ran a "Full page update" with the new image sitting in in place of the comicname.YYYYMMDD.jpg file, voila! The first page of my archive now contains only the YYYYMMDD.jpg file, with no trace of the sample I provided. Then I deleted the haloparty.YYYYMMDD.jpg file altogether, ran ANOTHER full update, and the first page displays the first comic fine...

I'm guessing that if you change the sample image to something else (which it sounds like you did, given that your sample has dissappeared from your site) and run a full update, the sample will dissappear. Now put a comic with the same date as the sample in /workspace/comics and run another full update and that should work (read: worked for me)

Summary:

I found the comicname.YYYYMMDD.jpg file in /public_html/images (yours should be ninjaseatpie.YYYYMMDD.whatever)

I took a random image, and renamed it to match the comicname.YYYYMMDD.jpg file

I had the actual first comic in /workspace/comics named YYYYMMDD.jpg (same date as the sample)

I ran a full page update.

I deleted the comicname.YYYYMMDD.whatever file from /public_html/comics

I ran another full update

I guess I'm obliged to point out that there are warnings against screwing around in public_html, and that you should follow my suggestions at your own risk.

Good luck.

Oh, and a piece of advice: Before doing anything, save your entire site to your hard drive and label it "backup," that way if something goes wrong you have a copy of your site before the mess-up.

What did you name the comic file? Whatwas the extension?
