TotQ characters

Post by Mwalimu »

I recently reread the whole series from the beginning and took a few notes along the way. So while we're waiting for the next strip, see how many of these minor characters you can identify. Caveat: I don't have the uber CD (yet) and it's possible some of these are much easier to people who have access to the information therein.

Adrin
Deep Green
Farthing
Feld
Inkling
Oakroot
Oombaw
Pinky
Raintree
Riddick
Rint
Rose

Aislynn is the artist at F&O in Sanctuary

I wanted to ask RHJr about "Conner" in http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20041127.html; near as I can figure it is another name for Colin (a typo, perhaps?).

And wouldn't you know it, there is Fleet! I must have overlooked him the first time I went through.

Abram?

Yep, that's him.

On Friday I'll post where all these characters have appeared or been mentioned (including those BlasTech mentioned) that haven't already been in this thread. But I hope some of the rest of you will chime in with answers before then.

The response was... well, let me just say "Thank you" to BlasTech; if not for you this thread would have been totally dead.

Those only mentioned who do not actually appear are marked with a (*). In most cases, the strip indicated is the one where their name is first mentioned.

My original list of characters:
Adrin(*) - levmage of Freeman downs; father of Alan http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020414.html
Deep Green - leader of the Gragum following Quentyn's rescue of Nessie http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040213.html
Farthing - student at the College of Artifactors and Alchemists http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040106.html
Feld - Arbiter of Freeman Downs http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020519.html
Inkling - professor at the College of Artifactors and Alchemists http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040105.html
Oakroot - Tree Ape, delivery beast http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020915.html
Oombaw(*) - friend of the swamp chieftan's family http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040320.html
Pinky - BigDigger (star-nosed mole); pet/farming beast for Quinn's family http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020127.html
Raintree - healer for the Millfolk family http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20050327.html
Riddick - associate of the Millfolk http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20041025.html
Rint - scout from the swamp village http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20021229.html
Rose - one of the Elders of Freeman Downs http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020609.html

Characters mentioned in the ensuing discussion:
Fleet(*) - historical Questor http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20041127.html
Aislynn - artist at the "Fact & Opinion" http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040828.html
Miller - resident of Freeman Downs, father of an apprentice tinsmith http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20030525.html
Abram(*) - historical Questor http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20050130.html

A couple of questions about these come to mind:
Is either Pinky or Oakroot one of the oft-mentioned "bigdiggers"?
Is Miller Rahan's father?
Plus there is the aforementioned question about "Conner" http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20041127.html

A few other names you might not have recalled:
Quinn is Quentyn's father.
Arith is the swamp chieftan.
Cole and Marta are Lord and Lady Millfolk.
I could not find names for Quinn's wife/Quentyn's mother, Arith's wife/Nessie's mother, the Frog Mage, and the Elder/farmer's militia teacher in http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20020616.html.

edit - updated per RHJ's reply

Pinky is a BigDigger... a giant mole, essentially.
Oakroot is a Tree-ape.

More like grandmother? See also http://npc.keenspace.com/d/20040414.html (anybody know why I get "file does not exist" in IE, Netscape (4.7) and Firefox? Even turning Javascript back on in NS didn't help - ??? :(

I tried googling oom* grandfather and got nothing; googling "oombaw" turned up three references, 2 of them the "what did she say?" thread :)

The only other time I'd heard the term was in the movie "A Patch of Blue", which I watched only because it was the movie that got Elizabeth Hartman (aka "Mrs. Brisby" in Secret of NIMH) an Oscar nomination; unfortunately her career had nowhere to go but down after that, and she ended up jumping off her apartment balcony several years ago

The movie itself was horribly depressing; EH played a young woman whose mother was a prostitute; EH was blinded when her mother threw a bottle of lye or something at her, and later raped by one of her johns :( Her alcoholic grandfather ("oompaw") lived with them too, and started dropping her off at a park when he went to his day job, and she was befriended by a black man (Sidney Poitier IIRC) who ended up rescuing her from her family before her mother could open up her own whorehouse. :(
