"Pirates" is a very bad movie to judge by. I mean, after all, it's a small, fun movie that luckily turned out pretty good in the end - unlike most of similar projects.
But Dep should be judged by his roles in "Dead man", "Arisona dream", "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas"... I mean, for a role of "Dead man" where he's barely saying a word in second half of the movie, the entire acting is only in his face. I think it was done masterfully.

Don't get me wrong...I love Depp. He's been awesome in so many movies, especially when working with Tim Burton. "Fear and Loathing" is sheer genius.

I love his style, but I just don't know how impressed I am with him as an emotive actor. He's fallen into a gimmick trap lately (I say that having not seen his latest Oscar-nominated turn).

"Dead Man", for all its coolness, nearly put me to sleep, so I can't really speak to his performance in that one.

Hehe. I think it's actually his acting, together with Neil Young's improvised soundtrack, that holds the film together.

I don't know. Someone put it well recently when they commented about his most recent roles: A Keith Richards inspired pirate, a crusty recluse author, Willy Wonka, a rogue FBI agent, and a depraved nobleman, and none of them seem as if he's "acting." They all feel as if it's just him being himself. That says something, I think.
