I hate the Grammys (and the Oscars too, come to think of it)

"Pirates" is a very bad movie to judge by. I mean, after all, it's a small, fun movie that luckily turned out pretty good in the end - unlike most of similar projects.Kevin Wolf wrote:I don't know if he's an actor or simply a possesser of many nifty gimmicks. I mean, his most celebrated recent role ("Pirates") was hardly an acting gig, and I think he actually got nominated for that.
Some people act, others are just very handsome and charismatic and know how to show off really well. Depp, as much as we all love him, fits pretty squarely into the latter category, I think.
But Dep should be judged by his roles in "Dead man", "Arisona dream", "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas"... I mean, for a role of "Dead man" where he's barely saying a word in second half of the movie, the entire acting is only in his face. I think it was done masterfully.

Don't get me wrong...I love Depp. He's been awesome in so many movies, especially when working with Tim Burton. "Fear and Loathing" is sheer genius.
I love his style, but I just don't know how impressed I am with him as an emotive actor. He's fallen into a gimmick trap lately (I say that having not seen his latest Oscar-nominated turn).
"Dead Man", for all its coolness, nearly put me to sleep, so I can't really speak to his performance in that one.

I don't know. Someone put it well recently when they commented about his most recent roles: A Keith Richards inspired pirate, a crusty recluse author, Willy Wonka, a rogue FBI agent, and a depraved nobleman, and none of them seem as if he's "acting." They all feel as if it's just him being himself. That says something, I think.
