*Cough* The point is, Green Day said FUCK American on a AMERICAN based awards show and won Rock Album. For this, they are my heroes. Fuck "punk is this, punk is that, mainstream sucks, blah, blah, blah." It's about music, not whether your more "punk roxer" than the next fool. Let's face it, no matter how much each other tries to justify it, it's music and it about the feeling. I don't give a rats ass if Green Day "betrayed" punk or isn't really following the rules. Green is about making music and entetaining people through their opinions and voice.
If you can seriously critize a band, then let me see you just try and do what they did. Then, maybe if you have such a chance, maybe you can bad mouth. But any band that's survived that long and recieved such a recognition, HELL they deserve it and I mean any band who works their asses off.
Green Day is genius.

I was with you up until the criticism part. If you put something out there, you give anyone the right to criticize it. Just because I don't know how to play the guitar doesn't mean I can't recognize that Creed sucks.Kris X wrote:*Cough* The point is, Green Day said FUCK American on a AMERICAN based awards show and won Rock Album. Punk actually is NOT about any sort of message, it's about attitude. The Ramones rarely gave a fuck about politics, and Johnny was a republican. Punk was a response to the excesses of disco and classic rock and the self important stylish soulless jagoffs wandering around being such easily led consumer whores. Ramones songs weren't so simple because they couldn't play, it was because they hated guitar solos and other wankery. The Clash found the connection between the attitude and the politics, and later discarded it for danceable beats, but the original idea was to tap the disillusionment and boredom of the everyday kids who didn't have the money for the stylish leisure suits and like to laugh at the morons walking by who could. This attitude, of course, got absorbed into our culture when Nirvana got huge, and Green Day were prime benefactors. Green Day had that attitude, that snotty, sneering, go fuck yourself posture that punk originally sprang from. Yeah, they were commercial as hell, and punk meant very little by that point, but they kinda kicked ass. And then they didn't for a while. Which is what makes American Idiot so cool. Who thought these morons whose previous best record was named after some adolescent term for fecal matter would come back a decade later with a scathing political rock opera and once again rule the world?
But I still wanted Kanye West to win.

Yeah, weird, ain't it? But he was cool as hell otherwise, so whatever.
Topically, there was some filler in the Kanye record (and for fucksakes, would hip hop artists just quit it with the skits already?!?!), but the beats and arrangements are razor sharp on all the tracks. Mix Tape and Slow Jamz are fucking stupid and misogynist, but the kickass violin work on the former and the pitch-perfect Ready For the World sample of the latter are incredibly cool. After those two, track by track just rock. His personal lyrics go from sad and poignant to smartassy and hilarious seamlessly, and there are some top-notch guest spots. Most producers just like to make beat and let it roll for three minutes as the MC does what MC's do, but West builds songs, adding strings here, pushing a choir there.
I can't speak for his performance, but Jesus Walks is an incredibly powerful track. I'm an atheist and I jam to that.

There's a lot of excellent stuff on that record, but the massive sinkhole of idiocy that is the two tracks you just mentioned stuck right in the middle of the album screws up the whole thing for me.
Yeah, and I'm sick of the Goddamn skits. When the Roots' "Tipping Point" came out and was just 10-11 solid tracks of hip-hop perfection, I thought, "Maybe this is signalling the end of huge, bloated, hit-or-miss, self-indulgent 'epic' rap albums."
Nope.

On the subject of filler, I say that if a band/singer has one or two good songs, they should only charge the price of a single +$.25 for every crappy song they added.
...that's all they deserve!

I don't know if he's an actor or simply a possesser of many nifty gimmicks. I mean, his most celebrated recent role ("Pirates") was hardly an acting gig, and I think he actually got nominated for that.
Some people act, others are just very handsome and charismatic and know how to show off really well. Depp, as much as we all love him, fits pretty squarely into the latter category, I think.
