Probably not political enough for our man Van.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

The Ramones actually sort of coined the phrase "punk rock".
I said it was "iffy". Some of their songs had political inclines, but others didn't. Comparatively to bands that really beat the fuck outta society, the Ramones were kind of tame. I don't particularly like the Ramones, so I can't really comment.

I don't listen to the Misfits. Don't get the idea about me that Ii'm a dedicated punk rocker. I just listen to some of it and understand the history behind it.
The bands I listen to the most are Gwar, Korn, Rammstein, Metallica, Garbage, and Marilyn Manson (Though I am getting back into Slipknot. I wasn't too fond of their music when they began outside of some mosh tracks like "Wait and Bleed", though their evolution now at their latest album with stuff like Duality and Vermilion has pique my interest in them)

After reading your list of favorites, I am kind of surprised that you don't like The Misfits. They are the granddaddies of most of the music that you do like. However, to each their own.

Who do you guys think *should* have gotten Grammys?

Gwar.

Ha ha, just kidding.
I think someone should cut them some slack, though. I mean, Manson gets up on stage with a strap-on, ripped nylons, cutting tools, and a bizarre cabaret, but Gwar is ostracized for parading around in huge costumes doing performances not unlike oldschool B-movie horror films while calling themselves gods and fighting off demon alien scumdogs.

Damn ICP.

I think the Ramones are the rockin'-est band that ever walked the earth. I do in fact listen to much punk, but I'm not especially interested in anger, so thrash metal bands are not represented in my collection (unless you count King Diamond).

What usually winds up in my CD player is some old-school punk (and if you like it political, Van, you might like Sham 69, their music just fucking groans with lower-middle-class angst and claustrophobia) or some fine hip-hop.

Most recent purchase was the new Guitar Wolf album, which, predictably, is fuckin' awesome (and I'm seeing 'em live March 10!).

Edit: I have in fact never heard a single Gwar tune.

Edit again: Okay, now I have (thank you, iTunes!). Not my bag.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

You can get some free tracks.
I suggest Immortal Corrupter off of Violence Has Arrived. Whargoul is also pretty good metal, and Hate Love Song has a punky feel to it and is hilarious ("I love puppies... when they're roadkill" is an example of Gwar's genius)

The Polyphonic Spree's "Together We're Heavy" should have won best album. Or, y'know.. even been nominated...

Fantastic album, but it's not the type of music that's popular right now, so it didn't exactly have glowing sales (here in the US, anyway... broke platinum in the UK and Japan, but hasn't even made Gold yet in the US), and since the Grammy's are just a retarded popularity contest it wasn't even considered...

Oh well...

Nobody should win Grammys, because the Grammys should fold up shop and make way for a real music awards show.

Seriously, though--

Nominations for the first annual "Sappys", anybody? Music, TV, or Movies?

For instance:

Best Television Movie: That one where William H. Macy played a deaf guy, whatever the hell it was called.

Since we're so hot on the subject....

Polyphonic Spree might be the most punk band out there. There's, like, forty three of those fuckers, playing fluegel horns and glockenspiels, singing like a church choir wearing white robes with the most optimistic sound you could imagine. Now that's fucking subversive.

He's not up this year, I'm afraid. "The Missing" wasn't Sappy material, just boring and self-important.

I saw a promo for some epic series calledi "Into the "West" on TNT last night that is a clear frontrunner for a Best Miniseries Sappy for next year.

The theme of the story seems to be, "Them evil whities came and killed off all those kindly, peace-lovin' Injuns."

Man ... could we get a Sappy delivered to my sixth-grade Reading teacher? I think she found every book she could that fit the theme of white industrialists being evil people who destroy the good old-fashioned way of life ... and made us read it.

And then she took us on a field trip to the Metroparks Zoo just so we could see the rainforest and understand what we were DESTROYING EVERY DAY BY BREATHING.

I couldn't stand that lady.

Take a dollop of mawkish sentimentality, stir in a tablespoonful of "veteran performer who got shafted in his prime", then add a generous helping of white guilt and you got yourself a Sappy contender, brother!
