Domains

Post by Steverules »

Just out of curiosity why do people leave keenspace to host their own domain. I've noticed several spacers take the leap. What do you gain from doing that? Keenspace is free whereas your own domain cost you. And the more visitors you get the more money you shell out on bandwidth. So I sit confused as to why anyone would do that. Am I missing something?

I think it's mostly for the advertising that they can gain.

There are a bunch of reasons... Like a nicer URL... And stuff... But the main reason, which is a pretty good reason actually, is that you'll have 100% control over everything. Most people probably won't care about or need it, but there are always control freaks and people who want to extend their comic into a huge site with 500 gigabytes of downloadable homemade music videos, or something, who knows. Personally, as soon as I have a stable connection to the internet I will use http://www.sippan.se for something else, but keep sippan.keenspace.com for the comic... I like it here. *shoots roots deep into the ground so you'll never be able to get rid of me*

I was on Keenspace for a long time. It's pretty cool, but I didn't like the ad banner. And whenever the server went down, my website went down with it. Now I have a slighly more reliable domain. It's the control freak shizzle, yeah.

Also, it escapes the Keenspace stigma. Because let's face it, there is one. Makes it look more proffessional.

My domain is hosted on keenspace. So I have a regular keenspace account just like the rest of you, just without the .keenspace in the domain.

I jumped ship near the height of Keenspace's server instabilities. That's obviously been fixed now, but back then it seemed like it was only a matter of time until the whole thing gave up the ghost for good.

I was also in the midst of renaming my whole comics project and giving it a fresh start, so getting my own domain name and hosting was a way of symbolically saying to myself "I'm serious about this, and it's all in my hands now". That's not to say you can't produce quality work on Keenspace, because many people do - it just felt like it was my time to move on. I like the freedom it gives me, and being in control of every little thing.

I'm still pretty fond of 'space, though. Hence why I keep stopping by here.

Enh, I got here after the server instabilities ended, so it doesn't effect me.

Personally, I'm quite happy with a Keenspace domain name. It's only six characters longer than a regular "www.bootcamp.com" one would be, and it's free (and http://www.bootcamp.com almost certainly already exists... I could end up with something bizarre like http://www.bootcamp.net.uk or something, and the benefits would then be almost non-existent). I'm perfectly happy here, and wouldn't switch unless forced to.

Actually, most hosts give you a flat rate for bandwidth, so you're really not paying more for more readers unless 1)You've got a low bandwidth allotment, or 2) a shitload of readers. And even then it's usually no more than $1 per gig of bandwidth over, if not less.

Indeed. If domains were deadly expensive practically no webcomic artists would be able to afford it. Hell knows I'm a broke student and yet I've had my own webspace for over a year now.

Well that clears it up. I understand the control aspect. Didn't even think of the music and video downloads. I have a friend that hosts domains and he offered me free server space if I wanted to move there. I like the autoupdate of keenspace. I was aware of the negative connotation associated with the keenspace name in some circles but I think quality shines through and I could list several keenspace comics that kick the ass of non keenspace comics.
Toxic, question to you, how did you get keenspace to host a site without the keenspace url?

My domain and hosting is free, my brother co-owns a hosting company. To be honest, I'm not sure why I'm even here, it's not like I've ever looked into Keenspace hosting, I've never had the need to O.o

I own my own server. I did it to get away from all of the spammers getting at my email, and I was sick of having to change it every so often in order to get away from 100 spams a day. So I got me a server, and made myself a mail server.

Then I started loading it with web stuff, too :)

Essentially, I like the fact that I can do whatever I want. It's not just the "I can host videos and music if I want", because I don't. It's the fact that I can custom-tailor my comic using PHP, which isn't something that a place like KeenSpace can really do. But I'm good at PHP, and I can make things happen in it, so rather than restrict myself to autokeen, I make my own. :)

It's an odd time to make such a comment, when you have over 3000 posts to your name...

I dunno about anyone else, but it seems to me that one reason people might want their own domains is that keenspace is so heavily associated with keenspot... they want to get away from what feels like an inevitable end for their comic. I know almost the only reason I first got my keenspace account, besides the auto-update, was that keenspace comics are up for first grabs when it comes time for a batch of artists to get 'Spotted. I've sort of abandoned keenspot by now--I'm pretty happy with keenspace--but that's what I was thinking when I started out here, because most of the comics I read are on keenspot.

I doubt I'll ever leave keenspace. I don't mind the ad banner, and I don't really put anything but images online, and those I can host at photobucket in obscenely large amounts before I ruin out of bandwidth or storage space. :)

I just have a seperate domain so I can put whatever I need to on it without the need for it being a comic. Don't have to worry about popups, banners, or anything.

Sure, most of the site is mirrored here, but you can also see my new niece if you know where to look!

Plus, yeah, domains and webspace aren't free, but unless you're super popular most plans that are the cost of a Value Meal at McDonalds (or cheaper) will do you just fine.
