Well, the Christian God, and Jesus, had a taste for blood also, destroying whole cities on a whim, (I still say the story of Sodom and Gommorah is a garbling of the story of a pair of cities destroyed by earthquake and fire,) killing a guy's family, and practically destroying his life with disease on a bet.
Even Jesus bragged about cities being destroyed the same way Sodom and Gommorah were.

Not all Pagan gods fit into this pigeonhole Ben has stuck them in, in fact pagan deities as a whole were very much like humans.
Capricious, downright venal, and in a few cases very horny for good looking mortals!

When it comes to pagan deities, I enjoy the Norse gods, (and not the Marvel comics version,) they sounded like a fun bunch to hang with.

I've actually got a book that has both of the Eddas combined. It's pretty cool.

BTW, if you're looking for a good, long read, I'd recommend Stephen Grundy's "Rhinegold." It's a novel based on Wanger's Ring Trilogy. Very good.

A better book is "The Roaring Trumpet" by L. Sprague DeCamp and Fletcher Pratt.
It's the first of three books in a series.

Ever read it?

I PREFER to be detailed in my analyses... unfortunately there aren't enough hours in the day, and besides which it doesn't make very good conversation... these both apply strongly to the following. Also, I never claimed to know everything about ANY subject.

1.)I think that Ralph was refering to acts required of the followers, not acts attributed to the diety or dieties in question directly. Not that we couldn't have a rather interesting discussion of THAT too... but the right place for one to start would be more like Jericho and related cities rather than Sodom and Gammorah. And BTW, YES, I DO beleive that that was perfectly legit and might provide thought on the subject if people wish (although I ESPECIALLY can't garuntee a time frame... I am kinda flaky in that regard when deep thought is required and emotions are involved).

2.)As long as we are here: Hmm... define 'whim'. Because, even if the details of when mercy was applied versus when judgement was don't make sense to us*, I wouldn't call an overall plan to show the right way while still allowing freedom in general, show that it is not possible to acheive 'good enough' (meaning sinless) by human efforts, all the while bridging the gap in one way or another (as the specifics of his plan occured through the time stream) a 'whim'. I am probably not explaining this very well at all, but it will do for a starting place.

'Bet'? This may be a technical quibble (or it might not) but it is hardly gambling if you already know the outcome...
Besides which, death, in and of itself, is commonplace... from my POV it is the result of The Curse. Are you then going to blame God for taking away humanities earthly immortality? (If so, that might be an interesting subject of discussion for the boards... or some other venue if Ralph doesn't want it here for some reason... I might or might not participate.). The fact that God decided to arrange certain deaths in a certain sequence/time frame seems to me to be beside the point... I firmly beleive that Job is currently either pitying Lucifer or laughing at him HARD (or maybe a little of both), and in either case is GRATEFUL for having had the chance to set such a good example. If you read the end of the story it also works out that he got some good experiences in THIS world after the main situation was over.

Y'know.....if, as Lily stated, the boss was too concerned about the Christmas rush to fire Ben at that time, the rest of the employees actually have a great weapon at hand right now. A "Silent strike" where they all take a break at the same time.....and stay in the break room thus emptying the floor. And it's done without saying a word.....just the entire staff but maybe 1 or 2 cashiers staying to keep the customes from leaving en masse, silently taking the cash drawers and locking the cash registers and leaving some customers standing. He can't fire everybody because that'd close the store and Corporate would NOT be amused and want to know why.

THAT will get Beaver Boy's undivided attention immediately!

When he rushes in to demand what the hell is going on, he's told to either get rid of Beltane, let her stay but dissolve the "acceptance committee" and let us put the decorations back up or we stay right here.

Yes, this is drastic and puts all of their jobs on the line, but Beltane's gone WAY beyond "offended" and is just being a power abusing bitch. It's either that, or in a somewhat less-than-Christian mindset, get Beltane out back and she's found later in a dumpster, not necessarrily dead, but definetely NOT able to go back to work.

This crap's gone far enough.

Oh dear... I just remembered something...
Gunther... and to a lesser degree perhaps Zoot, Slick, and Velvet (Christmas tends to bring out the kid in us so taking it away would be something he might take personally...). As is implied on the cast page, I think Gunther can be a bit harder to control than just Ben's OWN actions.

I mean, I have no religion, but Beltane is going off the deep end.

I talked to a Wiccan friend today, showed her the stuff in the strips Beltane is pulling.

My friend told me "This has nothing to do with Wicca, I've never met any Wiccan that militant or outright asinine."

Well, most people in comic strips are caricatures, and Baltane is no exception.

She seems to be a conglomeration of the "ban Christmas" jerks, magnified to the Nth degree.

In fact my Wiccan friend loves Christmas too, especially Chstmas music.
(With the exception of modern pop groups singing traditional carols. I mean, Boyz II Men singing "Silent Night?" BLECH!)
