Leave it to the Chinese!
They are making furries!

I think these scientists have got their morals completely backwards. I find the killing of human-animal hybrid embryos just to harvest their stem cells morally objectionable. But the fusing of human and rabbit cells would be a noble endeavor is it were done with the view to one day creating a decent bunny girl.

Indeed. For too long we have suffered cotton-wool tails and felt'n'wire ears!

...Do you seriously WANT there to be tentacle monsters? Do you realize that if tentacle monsters existed, normal human males would have MUCH less sex than they have now? Come on, you're killing me here...LostNgone wrote:They are making furries!

I find it interesting that Dr. William Cheshire was in the article.

Ugh.. jesus fuck. I for one am sick of "scientists" throwing around this bullshit about the integrity and specialness of human cells and human life.
I put quotes around the term, because most of the people interviewed in that article were not researchers, but committee members and administrators who probably haven't seen th einside of a real lab in 10 years.
I for one am for this reasearch. Just as I'm for every other branch of research. If destroying a human embryos will brin g us closer to finding cures for the diseases plaging our species, and even allow us to break out of our self imposed genetic cesspool, then I say "Where do you want me to plug in the blender?"
Gah! This is almost as bad as that "animal rights" bullshit..

Unfortunately, it harkens upon a rather murky area of research ethics, related to fuzzy boundry conditions.squidflakes wrote:Ugh.. jesus fuck. I for one am sick of "scientists" throwing around this bullshit about the integrity and specialness of human cells and human life.

Killing a baby for research: wrong
Killing a single cell for research: not wrong
Killing a single cell that may become a human: fuzzy
Now, I personally don't have any problem with using fertalized zygotes for research, since they are just small groups of cells which haven't even differentiated. I would have problems with killing live babies for research. The question is where the boundry is (see also: the abortion controversy).
It is an interesting conicidence that this announcement comes just after an announcement that all of the stem cell lines that federally funded researchers can use are and always have been contaminated (by sugars that came from the mouse-or-cow based growth medium) and thus unsuable.

"If hooking a monkey up to a car battery will lead to a cure for cancer, I just have two questions: Which wire is positive, which one is negative?"
I am sick of these "This is morally wrong!" arguements on this research. I think we HAVE to do this sort of research. The human race is on an evolutionary path to extinction thanks to medical technology. The weak and strong are all living, there is no longer natural selection, and since we really can't "weed out the weak," we need to modify ourselves to make ourselves adaptable and stronger.
For abortion, I say within 6-8 weeks, same with stem cell research (6-8 weeks for a single unmodified cell cluster. Seperated cells? Keep on testing)Toawa wrote:Unfortunately, it harkens upon a rather murky area of research ethics, related to fuzzy boundry conditions.

My policy here is simple. Since we are intelligent and have moral sense we should be above harming animals for fun.squidflakes wrote:Gah! This is almost as bad as that "animal rights" bullshit..
Food - ok.
Medicine - ok.
Screwing with DNA in humans or animals to create something new... Not good. You never know what may happen down the track if you screw too much with nature! Adding animals traits to humans may be ok but I certainly dont like the idea of creating brand new species.
although, if we do modify the genetic structure of human-beings then what happens if the modified people are deamed 'dangerous' or 'unnatural' by other people.. How many will die senslessly. How many children will be rounded up into concentration camps and tortured and disected because of possible mutant strains... And is it really worth the results when we aren't sure of them?

are you suggesting that there'd be a Mutant/Hybrid Witch-hunt/Holocaust?
Maybe you're right.

Wow! A mutant/hybrid witch hunt/holocost would be something alright.
I can see it now, the call to arms led by an influential senator, a special school is created for teens who display these mutant powers, a second group of evil mutants are trying to destroy humantiy, while the graduates of the special school try to thwart the evil and save humanity at the same time..
Kids, genetic modification doesnt' work that way. If we get some mouse genes or some cat genes spliced in, the chances of a trait expressing are minimal. You know we're already in the neighborhood of 90% as far as sharing genetic material with every other species on the planet goes. 99% with the chimps. People aren't suddenly going to get ears and tails, as much as we'd like to see them. We certianly aren't going to get weird mutant powers.
Sure, if someone goes ahead and descides that human genome modification is a good idea, there will be some resistance. Remember when people didn't get the polio vaccination because their religion/morals forbid it? Me either. That's because they all died of polio.

That's not my line of thought.
I was thinking more Nazi-jew type holocaust, with innocent and essentially helpless deviants froma racial norm burned and tortured and worked to death.

I just hope that people in general are better than that when someone is first able to create a new sentiant spieces. Not the bunch of complete fuckwits that about half the people around today seem to be.
