which one?
which one?
Well, I drew a girl and decided to make it my first crappy ink job with a random Skilcraft roller ball pen I just found. After I scanned the picture in, however, I noticed there was something funny with her face. I used Photoshop to move her right eye down and to the left. Now I've looked at these pictures so long, I can't tell which one looks better. So please tell me what I should do. The picture on the very left is the original. There are some minor adjustments on the other two, aside from eye positioning, but ignore those.

with that in mind, all of the open eyes that you have there ae too far away from the nose. maybe move them a qaurter of the width of the eye closer toward the right. or move the nose a bit to the left. The mouth seems to be a tad crooked. maybe try turning it and the lower lip line about 15 degrees clockwise.faub wrote:Even in anime, the eyes should be one eye width apart for the face to look right.
I like the right picture the best.
I remember caring... It was nice.
The rightmost picture looks to be the one to me.
And I'd never heard of that eye rule, FAUB.

Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.
Perhaps you have issues with anime? Besides, all I did was take out the lashes so that I could cut the eye out easier. In the third one the open eye is a little too stylized
Any other commenters on nose and mouth? I don't see any problems with the mouth. As for the eyes being too far apart; if you actually measure it, it is about right. It is also a stylistic bit as well. Some anime artists have their eyes abnormally far apart.maybe move them a qaurter of the width of the eye closer toward the right. or move the nose a bit to the left. The mouth seems to be a tad crooked. maybe try turning it and the lower lip line about 15 degrees clockwise.
I've actually seen that rule on most of the anime tutorials I learned from. When I draw, however, I usually estimate everything out of convenience, which, unfortunately, leads to disastrous results sometimes. And I'd never heard of that eye rule, FAUB.

Is she opening one eye, or winking with one eye?
Because she doesn't look like she's winking - when someone winks, their face ... for lack of a more technical term, scrunches up more on that side. The cheek comes up, the eyebrow comes down.
if you were going for "opening one eye", then you've got it.

The eye rule can be found in pretty much any tutorial that describes the structure of the face.
The right-most face is the most correct and no, the open eye is not too far from the nose. It's just about right. The inner taper of the eye should approximately touch the edge of the nostril if the nose were directly between the eyes. Since her head is tilted back it does this. The closed eye appears closer because of the shape of the face. It's a foreshortening issue.
Generally, if you follow the rules of drawing a face, even if you draw a cartoony face, you'll get good results. When you start messing with the structure of the face, you can make the character look evil, stupid, or whatever. If you know the rules, you can mess with the rules to good effect.
My main complaint about the third pic is not with her eyes but with her mouth. It's too far to the right (her right) and it's not parallel to the eyes. Actually, if you brought the open eye down a hair more and moved the mouth a bit to her left it would be pretty close to perfect.
