Rrrrrr!
I am so fed up with my HTML editor! There are so many things it won't let me do! And I'm dead sick of my site for my comic.
Only I really don't know what to do. Free editors tend to be complete crap, apparently, but ones you buy are generally outrageously expensive. I can't afford it. Short of writing out every bit of script myself (which I'd most passionately rather not do, as there isn't enough tylenol in the world) I don't know what to do to make my site less sucky.
Anyone got any suggestions?

I've got Corel Draw.
And Adobe, but only the reader.
And that's it, really. The only thing that sucks harder than my computer is the programs on my computer.

Aranae is a good one but whether or not you want to use it depends on whether you use a WYSIWIG HTML editor or what amounts to a purpose-built text editor. Aranae is the latter.
There are no good WYSIWIG editors as far as I know. Adobe's is the only mainstream one I've yet to try but the rest aren't as versatile and certainly not as neat, tidy and efficient as writing the code yourself.

Okay, wait...I don't understand. "Purpose-built text editor" means what, exactly?Joel Fagin wrote:Aranae is a good one but whether or not you want to use it depends on whether you use a WYSIWIG HTML editor or what amounts to a purpose-built text editor. Aranae is the latter.

If it can be found on the internet, I can find it, but if it involves creating/fixing/programming a computer or anything related, I haven't a clue.

You have a couple options. Mozilla (the suite, not just the Firefox browser) has an HTML editor. That at least is free though I can't say how well it compares to what you've used in the past.
A couple other sites, probably some you've already looked at:
http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/
http://www.editplus.com/
http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/
http://www.chami.com/html-kit/download/
and the ever popular Google search
All I can really say is good luck with those. I don't use HTML editors.
Another method would be use check out Ping's templates and/or ask someone to help you create a web page based on a design you created.

Okay, you know you can write HTML in Notepad, yes? A purpose-built text editor is basically Notepad geared towards HTML programming. For example, some, when you type <P>, will automatically put in the </P> for you. Most of them colour code the text, spellcheckers will ignore the tags, they'll let you look at the code in different browsers and so on.godoftarot wrote:Okay, wait...I don't understand. Ahh...well, I'm sure by the time I'm done checking out every and all of those, I'll be frustrated beyond belief but I might also make some headway, so I got to try.
Where is Aranae, anyway?

But you have not invited me home to meet your mum yet.
I do all my HTML in Notepad, but that is because I only know how to make tables. For anything more complicated than <P> or <td> etc I have the Web Monkey take care of it.
A few years ago (in the days of win98) there was a rather nice HTML editor called CoffeeCup. I never used it, but most of the nerds who did PBeM used it to make their character and gameing pages.
That was not a recommendation, just another possible option.

Give NVU a try. It's free, and claims to rival FrontPage and Dreamweaver in web page editing capabilities. I doubt this, but after a quick look it seems pretty nice, and you can't beat free.

I used Arachnofillia for some time. It's a standard text editor but it has options for automatic entering tags and picking colours and all.
When I formated my drive once, I lost the program too. The thing is, I downloaded it from somewhere and then searched for crack, and now I didn't have energy to do all that again. Now I stick to UltraEdit that came in pack with some other programs on disc.

This is a pretty nice package. I usually use Dreamweaver. but it definatly seems to have the best of DW and FP. if they have it support ASP, Java, php, etc like Dreamweaver I'm sure we'll have a winner.cortland wrote:Give NVU a try. It's actually pretty easy to learn basic HTML skills if you read a lot of tutorials and such. One can do wonders with the most basic tables. What I do is I decide what I want, and then I look up online a tutorial on how to do it, if I don't know already. It's sort of like finding many, many geeks with too much free time on their hands, taking advantage of their expertise, and never having to actually communicate with them. Hehehe.
Another thing to try is find another webpage that has what you want on it, and see how THEY coded it (you can look at their source code with the View--> Source menu if you're using Internet Explorer), then alter their code to fit your page. After all, if it worked on their page, why shouldn't it work on yours? That probably sounds like plagiarism, but hey, as long as you're not stealing their CONTENT... Heh.
