Scary purchase
Scary purchase
Unless there were only minutes left on the auction, I think he made it twice as scary as it had to be by not waking Lily up and getting her input!

I think this is one of those "guy things" that Lily just wouldn't understand.

I know this isn't where RH is going, but this twisted part of my brain imagines Ben and company and accidentally hitting a porn site. The reaction would be much the same, I suspect.
(hey, it can happen. I was trying to access the local radio stations web site, fumbled one key, and wound up at a site that swamped me with really nasty popups. at work!
)
As for flea-bay, my first thought was that they were raising cash by auctioning off some of the games. After all, I think there was a comment of their being thousands of games. Even holding some back for spares and rotation, that's more than Ben needs for his arcade.

You can fool some of the people all of the time
And all of the people some of the time
But you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Eh... the market on eBay for classic videogames really isn't that great. (Trust me, I know; we used to do that at my former place of employment.) Unless you've got something really rare and special and in high demand, like a Black Knight 2000 pinball or a Bega's Battle (laserdisc game, only 5 complete machines known to still exist!), the average price for a 70's/80's-era classic is about $600-700 (though some, like Galaga, go for higher). Part of the problem is that unless you can find a local buyer, most people know they're going to have to fork over another $200-300 for shipping (those things weigh a good 200lbs or more!), and they lowball their bids accordingly.
Ben would probably have to sell a pretty substantial chunk of his inherited collection to raise startup capital for a business. At the very least, he'd have to do quite a bit of research into the market to know exactly what each game was worth, then cherry-pick the most in-demand machines.

Can I call 'em or what???DracoDei wrote:Although the POV (as Sharuuk somewhat suggested) that she simply would have been doing her freaking out sooner rather than later (and annoyed from having been woken up too) does have some merit too.

As you can see, they did not already have a house. The e-bay house could be sold for anything. I've seen a house built in an old missle silo that was listed for $10 mil. But, a "haunted" house could got for only $10.RHJunior wrote:The house was NOT part of the inheritance.... as will be clarified later.

Yeah. 'Lovecraft Manor' and the Thing In The Basement (unless Ben inherited the mad tulpas - but I had the impression they were destroyed. Probably flimsy without their progenitor to give them form.) I bet they'd been trying desperately to sell the place and finally put it on Ebay as a last resort. I'll bet it went cheap - within Ben's reach using his savings, no financing needed.Mjolnir wrote:As you can see, they did not already have a house. The e-bay house could be sold for anything. Two things in the recent strips bother me a little. Lily called Ben a lech when he was enjoying the close contact during the episode with the moving, and the way she went ballistic this time. She always used to enjoy his attentions and she trusted his judgement. Hope the pre-marriage Lily reasserts herself.
I beleive that there was a certain amount of tongue-in-cheek-ness to the lech comment (in otherwords, for instance, 'cuddle' is good, but an overcrowded house is really the wrong environment to generate it), and she rather had a certain amount of justification for reacting strongly to what very much sounded like a move that could have been VERY foolish (or at least highly risky) from a financial perspective.labrusca wrote:Two things in the recent strips bother me a little.
