if you were just goin for sometin that looks nifty and not used as part of the games controls probobly. but otherwise you are looking at too much bulk for it to be effective. then you got to take in account pressure sensetivity so you dont accidently break limbs or choke someone out. Even then you still wouldn't get the full effect you want. Then you have to look at cost effectiveness.

Well... I think we need to look at how an actual animal's tail works. Multi boned with several muscles working it, maybe even 2 or 3 for each joint. (Pics anyone?)

What about something that connects together kinda like Knex (ball on one end, socket on the other) but shorter and with spots on each end to attach a bicycle-type brake cable mechanism. When the cable is pushed, the the joint goes away. 3 or 4 connections per joint (or cheat and make the sections larger). The main tentacle could be thicker and move around, and the... "insertion end" could be minimally flexible, maybe even using flowing warm water to give an internal pulsing action (self-contained and circulating so no water from this system enters the body cavity).

The base of the machine could be moderately large, and as for resistance measurement, cable strain or the cooler rubber-based resistance meters (stretch = higher resistance).
