It's not entirely out of the question for them to just be 'Jake and Rick' I know that I call my Mother 'Shelley' whenever I need to distinguish her from say, other people's mothers.

Quite.

"Run-on" sentences are not merely long sentences, but sentences in which two separate thoughts are not properly connected; a very, very long sentence (even one which goes on for what, to a casual viewer, would appear to be an entire paragraph) can, in fact, be a gramatically correct entity, so long as it is written in such a way as to adhere to all the rules of "modern" english.

(Some would argue that my use of the semicolin was a breach of style, but it could not be effectively argued that the above sentence is actually incorrect.)

But my sentence wasn't grammatically correct, and was a mix of several thoughts that, while connected, were not all the same. And, yes, I know that a sentance can run on for an entire paragraph, how do you think I write such 'good' English papers without doing any real research? ^_^

One could distinguish between, say, Pop and Dad.

See, I wouldn't have thought of that since I have never heard anyone refer to their Dad as anything but Dad and Old Man. If it was 2 female parents, I might have thought of calling them Mom and Mum, since there are always arguments over which is the correct way here (I hate the word Mum).
Personally, I call my parents Mommy and Daddy, and refer to them as my Mom and my Dad, always have done...

I'm currently reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves: the Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss. Highly recommended for word geeks. I've described it as "hilariously educational".

Ms. Truss would recommend a semi-colon for Zavion's sentence, or maybe a colon. She would also be impressed by the proper placement (and non-placement) of apostrophes, but would decry the use of single quotes rather than double quotes.

My guess would be that 500 is the threshold, since Wolffur is still a lieutenant at 425 and hampsteracolyte is a lieutenant commander with over 600. Alfie's a Commander with just over 1000 and Allan is still a Commander with over 2000.

A little investigation shows that these are probably the threshholds.

I try to use 'single quotes' to express something that could be said and/or needs to be seperated, but isn't being said at the moment. As I assume all my posts as if they were being said, I don't put quotations around them (Or it would be read as

) reserving parenthesis for seperate ideas (and occasional OOC comments), and italics for emphasis on the pronounciation of a word, to clarify meanings. I rarely use bold as as an extra (because in IM's I always use bold so it's easier to read) or underline unless I'm very serious or kissing major ass. And I use * * for actions (or italics if I can't find them easily) and < > for telepathy, but, that only happens in RPing anyways. So, sorry for the confusion.
