Updating times poll

Post by Joel Fagin »

Two questions, just out of curiosity.

1. Why do you update your comic at the time you do so? Why is it, say, ten in the morning or whatever?

2. Why do you update on the days you do so? Not frequency. I don't want to know why you update three times a week, but rather why you do so on Monday, Wednesday and Friday instead of Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

If I had a semi-regular comic, I'd update at around ten in the morning local time (which is when It's Walky updates). That'd mean I'd be awake and present to watch reaction on the mythical forum that would go with my mythical semi-regular comic.

And I'd update on Monday, Thursday and Saturday because there are less comics being updated on those days. Spread it out a bit.

However, right now with my weekly thing, I update on Sunday so I get a weekend to finish up the comic. I upload it whenever it's finished.

Midnight; I used to have the comics go up at 8pm, so I could get feedback from friends right away when it switched over, but then I found if I pushed it back, I could get a whole extra four hours to edit/re-format/draw the next day's strip.

I chose Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (after giving up on the idea of Daily) because my days off work were usually Sunday and Monday, so I could spend two uninterrupted days on the comics (and because fewer other comics seemed to update those days).

Well, the Keenspace auto-update thing was set to 12:00 am, originally, but I set it ahead one hour for no other reason than to be different. Before that I set it to 6:00 am, but I figured that 1:00 am was just as good as any time. Pure whimsy, I suppose.

I update daily.

Why? Because I consider the art so bad that I can't afford to make readers wait one or two extra days for the plot to advance. I certainly wouldn't want to stare at my art for two days before seeing an update.

Plus, with a daily comic you can get in more practise at drawing your characters.

Midnight.
And on Sunday. Cause for awhile I kept finishing them on Sunday, so I decided to make Sunday the day.

Monday and Thursday. Namely because Monday is the first day of the working week and that's when most comics are updated anyway, and Thursday allows for two days after the Monday comic to do the next, as well as three days over the weekend for the following week's comic. I'm considering bumping it up to three comics which would mean the standard Mon-Wed-Fri, but at this time I'm quite happy with the schedule.

I always aim for uploading it somewhere around midnight - 7AM on the update days, with the accompanied news entry going up somewhere around 9AM - Noon. But sometimes I don't have a comic done on time, in which case I take liberties and upload it in the evening (hey, it'd still be Monday or Thursday, etc).

I update on Monday, Wednesday and Friday because it seemed easy enough to follow the trend of other people who have done comics successfully: Penny Arcade, Men In Hats etc. I also chose Midnight because I draw my comic anywhere from 3 days to a month in advance (my comic is so retarded, and second nature I can crank out jokes and gags in minutes) so I choose midnight so the comic can have a full day of being new before you have to wait for the next one. Though I think I just backed up my comic like an hour to 11pm the day before just so I can see if my comic updated properly before I go to bed.

Between 11 pm and 1 am mountain time (GMT -7), because that's usually when I'm finished working on it.

Sundays was my original schedule, and Wednesdays because that's sorta halfway between one Sunday and the next.

I update at midnight or shortly thereafter 'cause it's the beginning of the update day and all that jazz.

My original plan days wise was Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday because I do a six-paneler every third strip, so it's kind of like the Sunday strips of your standard newspaper comics. Now, though . . . hell, I dunno. I'll probably end up updating about twice a week, whatever days I get it done. It seems I'm just not cut out to do the three a week thing.

1. Well...I don't really update at a specific time in the day. Although it's usually early in the morning. Why? Because I always stay up all night...so I work on the comic at night the day before and post it early in the morning.

2. As for what days I update...I dunno'...I thought I could handle 3 comics a week, and Mon, Wed, Fri just seemed like the way to go.

I would have loved to update three times a week, but I'm not sure I can maintain that for a length of time. Sure, I got a dozen cartoons drawn in five days at one point, but it was the start of the holidays. I'm back teaching for another term...that sort of eats away at your time.

I've gone for Sundays and Wednesdays mainly because they are easy and pretty well evenly spread. It never crossed my mind to check when everyone else was updating.

School Spirit goes up at just after 11:00 pm the night before the update (local time) because I had no idea how to convert the time Keenspace uses. I aimed for midnight, got an hour early, and thought 'bugger it, close enough.'

Also, at that time of night occasionally I am still up to check whether it worked okay.

I update at 1am Pacific time that is 9am over here, just because it's the start of my working day and I am the center of the universe AND YOU WILL ALL BOW TO MY GALACTIC POWER... ah er ahem, scratch that last bit... Anyway, I set it that way because I figured it would be easy for me to find out immediately if there was something wrong, if it updated during my waking hours.

As for the schedule, I haven't yet set one because I am concerned of committing to it. At the moment I am churning out about 3 comics a week, but it takes me 6-8 hours to do the coloured ones (that are the vast majority) and 3-4 to do the B&W digitally, or 2 hours inked and scanned. God forbid that I promised people to update on such and such days! At least, this way, I can relax things down to 2 strips a week, possibly one b&w, when I am busy.

when I do update regularly, I update about midnight-2am, and m-f, or m-w-f if I'm really ambitious. I update between midnight and 2 because that's when I finish drawing (though I'm trying to make a buffer right now so that I stop that bad habit), and I don't like having any obligations on weekends, so I tell myself "I'll have a weekly comic!" then it occurs to me that I have to draw on sunday night and I smack myself for being an idiot.

I have no idea when my comic updates - I set it when I got the account and generally forgot about it thereafter.

Days of the week - MWF. Mostly because I'm at work those days (faster connection) and I wanted to update three days a week.

1) I actually don't really know when mine updates... sometime during the night, I guess.... I'm really bad at figuring out time differences, so when the choice came along I just clicked one

2) I chose mon-fri.... I guess because it seemed like a natural progression. First I tried mon-wed-fri, but I was drawing way to many comics for that, so I switched to this schedule. I suppose I could do it Mon, tues, thurs, fri, sat or something like that... but I'm sure I would get confused when naiming the files

I used to update Monday through Friday (with the occasional extra stuff on the weekends), but I ran out of buffer and can't seem to find the motivation/energy/inspiration/whatever to build a proper one back up. So I cut back to M-W-F, and even now I'm running by the skin of my teeth.

I've considered updating T-Th-Sat just to spice things up (plus give me an excuse to goof off Sunday nights). I've also considered cutting back further on updates to I can actually get them done on time, but my art isn't sophisticated enough to warrant that, I think.

Also, my comic updates at 2am. I had it at the usual midnight, but I get home late and by the time I finished the comic for the night, midnight had passed and i'd have to go in and manually update it anyway. This way, I've got it in the system to update automatically and anyone who reads it during the day wouldn't notice a difference.

Monday Wednesday Friday, not just because it's the cool thing to do, but because Saturday has been proven to get the least amount of hits of all the days of the week, and I think all the more comics for the reader to look at on Monday. It's like an overdose of drugs.

I update at midnight. It's the most reasonable reason, and I wouldn't have it anyway else.

I do it at midnight, since I usually should be finished with the comic by then. I also strive for Monday, Wednesday and Friday, because with coloring and other things in my life, once every other dayy is all I can manage, and I get more hits during weekdays, evidently from people browsing at work, then during the weekends.--Al

Most big guys agree with me that Monday is the webcomic gold. Most people catch up with their comics monday morning at work.

But I wasn't aware of that when I chose a monday schedule. And to be honest, for some reason my traffic is quite uniform during the whole week. I chose mondays because if I don't have saturday to work on my comic, then I have sunday.

As for the time slot... I have no fucking idea. I made some calculations to make usre it would update when it was 0:00 for me. But turns out it updates when it's 2:00.
