Outtakes fad
Theres a new fad at start, with authors making sketchy comics about downsides behind making their comic.

I think this was behind the entire concept behind The Rules. And it seems to have worked!
I loved this outtakes strip at Kelen
(BTW, I must be really cool. I didn't have it bookmarked so I used the calendar, and BLAM, bullseye, with the first try!)
But the kind of self-refferential out-takes you mention usualy get on my nerves very fast. And I don't like breaking the 4th wall.

You are the Non. You must go now, and never return."
"1.Scan in high res 2.tweak with curves, levels or something to clean up the scan (or use channel mixer to remove blue pencil lines) 3.Add colour using a layer set to multiply. 4.Add wordbubbles and text as vector shapes. 5. Merge all layers. 6.resize to the web size. 7. Export/Save for Web" that's all I know about webcomicking.

For the record, I think Jaded's outtakes were mighty funny, and I KNOW that Night and Days's are gonna be funny too. I wasn't intending to critique anyone, just poke random people in the ribs with a pencil.
Basically, if a comic follows one serious story for a few months, nothing wrong in taking a break with some silliness, specially if the storyline is finished. However, with some comics you'll see a "I couldn't finish this comic" 4th wall breaking routing from second update and on every two or three updates. That, I hate. I lose respect for the comic as soon as I see a supposedly silly self-referencial hard-is-a-life-of-lazy-artist comic if I haven't seen any real story before that.

This may sound weird, but I started without a 4th or even 5th wall, and since I've been stuck in a storyline, I miss it, and feel as if I've been cheating.
I've read many times how it's considered a cop-out for when people run out of ideas. That's not been the case for me. As a matter of fact, I now have to jot down my gag ideas until I can get my idiots back home.
I miss the freedom of my previous stuff. I could do whatever the heck I wanted as it popped into my head. Storylines are cool I guess, but I don't draw fast enough for them.
I still try to stick to my roots by tossing in lines like "I'm going to beat your ass back to black and white news-print", but it's not the same.
Here's something: I cranked this out on the fly in about an hour for this post. If you get it, cool. If you don't, then you are missing some cool comics out there (and I don't mean mine!)

Solidarity comrades!!!

I did some cast interviews and outtakes early on in the comic, and I included them in the CD of Mixed Myth. Other than that...hmm...well, I guess there's the bit I did for Online Comics Day that detailed the dificulties (and wolves!) involved in doing it all.
