700 pixels or 800 pixels?

Post by Jigglyman »

My comic is in a newspaper syndication format (AND I'M NOT CHANGING IT MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) so I was wondering what would be better: 800 pixels wide or 700 pixels wide? 700 fits on 800x600 browsers, but is harder to read.

Whooo I'm lazy. I posted the exact same thing on the bCx forums.

Hey, first of all, I really like your simple cartoon style.

Second, obviously, the 800 pixel wide one is a little easier to read at high resolutions, but the 700 pixel one isn't that bad either. Myself, I'd keep it at 700 px. You have to compromise your comic size sometimes for those poor unfortunate souls who still use 800x600 resolution. :D

Up to you. How many people do you want to turn away? :D

You could make the comic just under the width of a browser window in 800x600 mode. That's about 750 to 770 - I forget - but it counts here as a compromise.

If you want to abandon Autokeen, you can also make Flash comics as they can be the same size on the screen no matter what resolution you're running at.

Oh, I posted my reply at Buzz.

Your style reminds me a little of WIGU, by the way.

Having to scroll a little to see that last panel isn't going to hurt anyone. I would go with what looks better; if there were individual panels too big to fit in the resolution I would worry (like if you did comic book type pages and some of the panels stretched all the way across.)

People who use 800x600 are way used to scrolling. I know this because I was one fairly recently (and a 640x480er for years after that became gauche.)

I personally have to vote for the 700. They art/readability isn't very compromised, and there is no annoying scrolling involved. I want to be able to leave my pointer on the "Next" button.

700. I would have to scroll right on my laptop. (I tried getting a 1024x768 screen, really I tried.)

I'd go for 700. I'm using 1280*960 and find it a perfect size for the strip. :)
Not using Keenspace, I just am here. For some reason. Probably because I'm making a webcomic. Yeah.

I would go for 700 myself... I hate scrolling to the right to see the last panel. Besdies, it still looks just as good and it isn't hard to read.

700, because it's easier on alot of people, admittedly it also depends on your comic page setup and what not but 700 is the better guess. The scritping isn't hard to read either way.

700. Text is not so much harder to read. On the other hand, aroung 30% of people still use 800x600. Besides scrolling horizontal, there's also an issue of not being able to see the entire panel at once. I think that's pretty important issue.

hmm... just curious, what was the oryginal resolution?
The 700px kinda strikes me as less readable than it should be... may be just me though.
You are the Non. You must go now, and never return."

"1.Scan in high res 2.tweak with curves, levels or something to clean up the scan (or use channel mixer to remove blue pencil lines) 3.Add colour using a layer set to multiply. 4.Add wordbubbles and text as vector shapes. 5. Merge all layers. 6.resize to the web size. 7. Export/Save for Web" that's all I know about webcomicking.

750.

It fits on 800x600 screens even with sidebars and scrollbars. On this BBS and others it fits the screen with the left hand bar at 1024x768.

Go for 800!! Go for 800!! 800x600 res always looks horrible!

That's just my personal opinion of course, but that's what you've asked for. It looks cleaner, the dialogue is clearer, and if the statistics are to be believed, if 30% of people still use 800x600, then 70% use more.

I have my cartoons at 900x400 (including title, date, number etc) and it fits into the next resolution level (1024x768) easily.

Oh, and mine's a newspaper format too! Together we can change the world!!
