You guys are taking this too far...

Universities.
Putting a university is not a bad thing unless your comic is about roomates that go to the same university and play games all day making sarcastic quips to one another.

Talking pets
Talking pets are not a cliche of webcomics. The always existed and always will.

Celebrity cameos
Not necessarily bad, if well done.

Parodies of superheroes.
See above

Fanboy references to Trek, Star Wars, or Buffy
See above

ELVES!! BLOODY ELVES!!
They are characters, that's all. So maybe the fantasy genre is a little crowded, yes, but this is not a webcomic cliche.

Shy characters who rarely, if ever, speak, but gradually come out of their shell more and more as the story goes along.
This is called character development.

Archnemesis.
What the fuck? WHy is this a bad thing?

I know "cliches" generally implies "bad" but I took some pains to point out that it wasn't intended as such. Apart from anything else, spoof comics rely on cliches. Universities is just a case of "write what you know". Archnemesi, although often handled in a very cliched way,* are at the core a necessity for many styles of story.

These are just things that are used a great deal - that's all. I, personally, like to be original and different - even to the extent that I don't even swear in real life. If I did a serious comic, I'd deliberatly avoid all the webcomic cliches I could (although there are plenty of good cliches from other genres and mediums worth mining).

Really, webcomic are just as bad as print. Print is dominated by superheroes and web is dominated by wacky adventures with talking pets and sci-fi technology at universities. A list, I thought, would shove these cliches into the faces of the readers and give them pause. I don't mean that they shouldn't be used, just that I'd prefer people to consider not using them, to think about it a little. I'd like it to be a decision - either way - rather than just doing things because they seem obvious or because everyone else uses them.

If the decision is to use the cliches, no problem! They obviously work, after all.

The guy who can create any form of sci-fi technology (lasers, teleporters, etc).
They've already been created by the brightest technological minds in the Titan and Astonian galaxies! Just fill out a draft form, and you're good to go!!

Universities.
Only flight testing school.

Talking pets
Only robotic ones.

Megaman and Final Fantasy sprites.
Not if you paid me.

Fourth wall (lack of).
Nope.

Manga.
Psuedo-Manga. And only in the nose and eyes.

Lesbianism
Thank God, no.

The big dumb guy who means well
Zip.

The nerd that by all rights should not have a date but woman literally fall over
Zero.

An evil villain that acts like a buffoon
My main characters are the villians. Really.

Celebrity cameos
No.

Big-breasted ladies with loose morals.
No.

And anything "goth".
Only if you consider dark clothing and Gothic architecture.

Naked furrys instead of a good story.
Nope.

"At least it can't get any worse" followed by something worse (yes, I got peevee on that)
I strive to keep everything on the "it's worse" level, so I can just skip the "It can't get any worse" part.

Wacky college roommates.
No.

Smart and reasonable but very bad tempered female character.
No.

Gaming references.
No.

Parallel dimensions and a multiverse taken as a matter of fact, even as a "given".
If you overspeed in a spacelane, you can get sent into another dimension. But the stress would rip your ship apart and kill you instanly, so it doesn't really matter.

Fanboy references to Trek, Star Wars, or Buffy
Nope.

Self-depreciating humor about how bad your art is.
Snort. No.

Young girl/boy DESTINED to be a princess/prince that saves the world and gets a gooey romance with some hot person
Uh-uh.

The token fanservice character
No.

ELVES!! BLOODY ELVES!!
YES!! Elves, Demons, Human, Astonians, Cattarrii, Devarnians, Fhish, and sentinent Dragons.

Seems like Jesus pops up quite a bit.
Only in speech.

ROOM MATES
Not really.

Computer game players who become heroes or otherwise extremely important to the fate of the <insert here>
No.

Dark and Mysterious Past
Dark and Mysterious past? We havent gotten out of the past yet. We'll dub it, Dark and Mysterious present.

Amnesia
No.

Psycho Character
Brothers are crazy. Strikers Syndrome effects 70% of all Titinian Demons.

Highly intelligent sarcastic character surrounded by idiots.
Nope.

Characters who wear sunglasses all the time, so you never see their eyes.
Nope.

Dullard idiot characters who yell stuff like "MONKEYS!" and "PIE!" for no reason.
No.

Ultra-violent female characters.
All Demons are violent. It is said that when they get mad, their blood literally boils...

Shy characters who rarely, if ever, speak, but gradually come out of their shell more and more as the story goes along.
No.

Super-hot babe that the main male characters have no chance of scoring with, yet they still try despite the fact that she treats them like dirt.
No.

Archnemesis.
Not really.

Shouen-Ai, Shoujo-Ai.
I would die first.

Super-cute, cat-eared boys/ girls.
Guilty, I suppose; though Raven and Skye's rather awkward and unattractive ears were meant to make less appealing; yet all my readers love them, damnit!! They are evil!! You mustn't love the cruel beings that are my main characters!!

Evil Villian that becomes the hero near the end of the story.
Somewhat. Raven has his good moments throughout the story; but he still doesn't come close to becoming the shining example of goodness.

6 /40 possible cliches for FireBird.

Computer game players who become heroes or otherwise extremely important to the fate of the <insert here>

Two out of forty. Still, it shouldn't matter any. It is a proven fact the only difference between reality and fiction is that fiction must make sense.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.

Here's two but I'm not sure if they count.

1 - Using the words 'random', 'random humor' or 'randomness' to describe your comic.

2 - Having your slogan begin with the words 'because' or 'fear'...unless, of course, those words are in the title...

The guy who can create any form of sci-fi technology (lasers, teleporters, etc).
Sort of, but he only makes 1 important sci fi thingy.

Universities.
Mentioned, but not of any real importance.

Fourth wall (lack of).
I did one, but it was just a one shot thing I did as filler.

Manga.
I guess so.

Lesbianism
There is one, but its not even mentioned or important.

The big dumb guy who means well
... Actually, its sorta played by a girl... but shes not dumb, just very very motivated.

An evil villain that acts like a buffoon
Technically, no real villain.

Big-breasted ladies with loose morals.
Nope. Although some boobs got big for a bit, I've been trying to tone them down.

Gaming references.
... Yes. But not in the actual strip itself.

Parallel dimensions and a multiverse taken as a matter of fact, even as a "given".
Actually, they've been completely disproven.

Fanboy references to Trek, Star Wars, or Buffy.
Ok, just 1. And it was the 4th wall breaking filler strip, so it shouldn't count.

Self-depreciating humor about how bad your art is.
I don't have to do it myself when others volunteer to do it for me!

The token fanservice character
Well, it could be argued that damn near every one of my characters could be fanservice... if only I could do it good I'd be set.

ROOM MATES
Well, for 3 strips they were, but I got outa that pretty quickly.

Computer game players who become heroes or otherwise extremely important to the fate of the <insert here>

... Well, maybe... but the previous non shown game playing has nothing to do with anything.

Damn! Both mine fall into that!! But I only used random in one cause it isn't really a continuous strip, just random crap doodles I make for the forums. And while my other one doesn't use the word because, it is sort of implied by the sentence structure. Fuck. Fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

Yeah, the title itself has attracted lots of naysayers (most nice though), so while making my newsbox thingy, inspiration hit me. How do I pre-emptively defend the title? And taking a note from my legendary work in debate class, came up with that tagline.

As a cliche-ee, I felt that adding original content to the list would tarnish my reputation as an artist.

...

And I can't think of a damn thing to add. Well, how about sharply drawn and digitally colored talking head comics?

Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.
