I'm not really what I am...

Post by UncleMonty »

This is just my opinion-of-the-moment here, but I think there are two kinds of people with "furry avatars". One sort who picks a kind of animal that in some way represents his or her real traits, and the other sort who pick a kind of animal which is as different as possible in every way. Usually far more glorious, powerful, wise, and lovable or fearsome.
One is a caricature, the other is fantasy...

The fantasy types sometimes worry me a little.

About as silly as these selfsame people accusing other people of being 'mundanes in disguise' for not jumping through their specific set of philisophical hoops....

First time being added to a forum here, so bear with me ;)

I've been a fan of this comic for about a year and I re-read it in my free time cause it is really good. I became incredibly interested when the current plot started, about the koala saying he had an astral self that was totally different than him and sounded extremely silly.

I'm not discounting the fact that there are others like him out there. I believe I am something myself, but I do not advertise it like a billboard. It is a part of my faith and belief and it is very dear to me. I'd like to clear a few things up though, as to not be considered one of people who can be carried away in a certain white van.

There are two kinds of the 'astral self' people out there: 1) those that go hardcore into it and will not take any kind of argument for it, stating that they are superior in every way and there's nothing you can do about it and 2) those that are willing to listen and will not stop an argument by the same response each time. If you want to disprove the existance of a person being a unicorn, be my guest. My answer is that what I feel I truly am feels right to me, but it doesn't make me superior to anyone else.

That's my two cents at least.

Well, Kyrunn Melagnus, far be it from me to demean your belief system. I don't really care if people believe themselves to be unicorns, dragons, hobbits, reincarnated royalty, dead generals, or poached eggs - just so long as they don't interfere with my life in the process. In any way, directly or indirectly, even so indirectly as my taxes going to help pay for their treatment.

That said, I don't see why we can't be friends. Welcome to the forum!

You and I share a common philosphy, UncleMonty. If someone wants to believe that they're something else, go with it. I know who and what I am and I know where I want to go with it. I don't let it interfere with my life, just add it to the maelstrom that is surviving ;)

[...unWARP!!!]

Good evening.

I'm more the caricature type myself. It's people like Mr. I'm-not-a-koala-I'm-a-unicorn that give furry fans a bad name.

I'm the caricature type, too. In fact, I've been told that I look like my avatar. But then that's how it was designed.

And J.A.M. is entirely right about "Mr. I'm-not-a-koala-I'm-a-unicorn" giving furry fans a name as being entirely nuts. It only takes one person like "Timmy Nimnul" to meet somebody like our koala to blow the whole thing out of porportion.

A person like "Timmy Nimnul" can blow almost anything out of proportion and make someone look nuts. If everybody at furry conventions dressed in normal clothes and dealt with "furryness" as an author or artist deals with characters they depict the "Nimnuls" of the world would still try to display them as freaks -- because that's how the "Nimnuls" get attention, which translates to advertising clout with translates to money.

I'm not saying there aren't any weirdos in the fandom, only that the fandom makes an easy target. Try to do the same thing about a popular and influential religion, or a strong industry, or a culture, or any "socially acceptable" interest (which is going to have some weirdos in it, too, if it's big enough) and more than likely you'll get shut down as a crude insulter. Do it to a group that's small or weak enough and you get away with it.

But whatcha gonna do? > shrug <

Pardon my saying this on a wholesome board such as this one,
but this makes the case for a certain gryphon's rant, and what
is seen is proof enough. Am I right about this, folks?

What ranting gryphon would that be?

I don't recall any gryphons in any of Ralph's recent comics, and a search of this forum for the words "rant" "gryphon" or "overboard" produced no results but this thread in the current year.

That rant was exactly how I feel. Those who keep saying they are a real fantasy beings give those of us who take our beliefs seriously a bad name. They are also giving furs a bad name, making it feel like we are better than everyone else. We are all just human, in the long run. Some of us just have a feeling we are something more. At least, that's what I think.

About the otherkin in the strip...Playing devil's advocate here:
If I met this guy in the real world, I'd discount him as crazy. But UTLT, from the perspective of Ben, Warhorse, or even Lily...Well, Ben and Warhorse have both had the aspects of their subconscious take physical form. And Ben's Id tried to kill him. I'm just saying that in that context, I wouldn't dismiss the koala's claim automatically (although it would probably take little research to see that yes, he is crazy).
