The best holiday to introduce!

Post by MixedMyth »

What holiday do YOU think should be more widespread?

Me, I vote for Escalade. When I was little I lived in Switzerland for a year, specifically in Geneva. They've got this holiday that basically celebrates the last time the city was invaded. This was back in the days of spears and armor and things. Take a look. Think of it as Halloween meets a ren faire meets a chocolate festival. Kids go 'round in costumes, there's all kinds of reenactors marching around, and you get to eat a marmitte- a giant chocolate cauldron filled with marzapan. It's amazing!

That one sounds like a lot of fun! Well...minus all the chocolate. I'm not a very big chocolate fan.

As a Bill Murray fan I feel obliged to celebrate groundhog day.

...By grabbing one of them critters and then proceeding to try drive my car off a cliff. Far less painful than Festivus.

United Nations Day. It should be an international holiday.

... and since it's my birthday, I should get it off.

Hehe, another of those interesting things that sort of morphed into something else over time. Lucia's evil husband was going to force her into prostitution, but she refused so they carved her eyes out and had her walk through the city streets while beating her with burnings sticks. 1800 years later it's a cute little holiday with a girl in a beautiful hat.

Actually, not too long ago the Lucias had a red ribbon hanging down from their hair, as a symbol of the blood running from her eyes...but they've sort of stopped wearing them recently.

I totallly vote for a Swedish traditional Midsummer! Do you celebrate that at all? We cut down a tree, chop off the branches, chop off tons of branches from 10 other trees, and then tie the branches back on the first tree so it's all green and leaf:y. Then we hang rings of flowers in it, I heard it's supposed to look like a penis. When it's finished it looks sort of like this..

But then comes the best part!! Then everyone in the group, this can be hundreds of people, stand in a huge circle and jump around and wave around with their hands and look painfully silly, and shout about little frogs that don't have tails!!

The little frogs! The little frogs! They're so funny to watch!

No ears! No ears! And no tails!!

Uhm... we Pagans have something similar for Midsummer, but minus the shouting about little frogs without tails.

Swedes need to share whatever the hell they're smoking all the time.

Yeah, like May Day....which originally came from an early pagan festival anyway. It sounds a lot like the tradition of having a May Pole.

I think many holidays would be improved by the addition of frogs. Or toads. To lick.

Britain: Straw Bear Procession In Whittlesey the Sunday before the first Monday after Twelfth Night is the procession of the straw bear. A man wrapped in straw from head to toe dances through the streets. Other mummers plays have characters called She-Males. These are men who dress up as hags in the plays. The hags are goddesses of winter

I just thought of another one. Escalade is still my first choice, but it'd also be really cool to celebrate Carnival. I guess I could always go down to New Orleans for Martis Gras, but that's a ways away.

Or, or....we could combine Escalade with Carnival. :D
