pop-ups/pop-unders

Post by Xmung »

all of a sudden every single page i access in keenspace is deluged with e-bay pop-under windows. every single god-damned page. does this happen to any one else or is my pc haunted? is this new keenspace policy? if so, surely most people trying to read an archive will ignore the first, ignore the second, get really pissed by the third and probably close out of the site by the fourth. maybe it's me. i hate advertising, but i can live with banner ads. really i can. i could even say i'll occassionaly click on a banner ad. but pop-unders/pop-overs just are plain rude especially if they are for the same thing for every single page. couldn't at least a cookie be set to only display the goddamned thing once per session, not every single page?
ARRRRGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

that's my rant. what do others think? (btw, everytime i added an option to this quiz another window popped up, and i found myself typing the option into the e-bay ad search field!!!!!!!!!!)

I use AVG Anti-Virus to find viruses.
I use Ad-Aware 6.0 to find spyware.
I use:

http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

to find everything else.

I must admit, IE is getting better. IE6 allows you to reject cookies. And it doesn't seem to crash as much as before. Maybe people switching to other browsers have got them worked up.

Heh...I hate them with a passion. Someone pointed me to the Pop-up Stopper from panicware, and I haven't had issues with them since. But yes, Ad-Aware is a must, especially if you use KaZaA or the like since they're LOADED WITH SPYWARE. I give bonus points to both since they're free. Free is the magical word for starving artists/college students like myself.

as popeye would say: "how embarrassink!"
i actually had three varieties of adware on my pc - and i have no idea how i picked them up. all i can say is thank god it wasn't a new keenspace policy and i've calmed down a bit now....

pant pant pant...

but do any of you technical types out there have any idea why it was only happening when i visited keenspace pages (guide.keen, forum.keen, comicname.keen...)?

Many spyware programs operate by sending specific ads to specific places. Ie, if you're on a gaming site, they send you gaming ads. So adware certainly has the power to tell what site you're looking at.

Spywares are the worst hellspawn since computers are invented. They install on cour comp through some site that you visited (maybe you accidentally clicked one 'ok' button too much) or are being installed besides some programs you install (that's why you should real terms of service during instalation). I think that, for instance, norton antivirus is acting like 'spyware' sending your data to their central.
Uh, actually, I think that's spywares. Addwares are similar but they provide you with popup adds when you don't expect. So, it was not keenspace. I don't have popup blocker, yes to popups on keenspace for me. As far as I know, KeenSpot puts a popup every now and then, on every ten or twenty pages you load.
Spywares and addwares most likely can be found as resident programs in right corner of your taskbar. They can be pain in the ass to deinstall sometimes.
Hm. Sorry if someone already said this, or if I provided some data that is incorrect. I'm in hurry, gotta go to 'junk' forum.

Since we're on the subject of spyware, I ran Ad-aware again and apparently I picked up some program named "Wild Tangent" somewhere. It removed it for me, but I can't honestly think of where it may have come from.

I wonder if anyone is going to pick the "I love them!" option in the poll. ::chuckles::

No, the worst thing was Gatorware.
Remember when they had that popup which said "do you want to install this, yes/no" and if you clicked no then a second would pop up saying "are you sure you don't want to install this, yes/no".
That was when I said enoughs enough for IE (this was before the google toolbar came out).

Wild Tangent came with the new version of AIM.

When I was visiting my dad's house over the summer, I decided to install Spybot S&D and Ad-aware on his computer. What a nightmare, Ad-aware found like...600 different things to be deleted. My dad's computer's really old. There was Gator, comet cursor, some sort of date/time taskbar thingie, it was awful. There were four of these things programmed to run at start-up I had to get rid of.

From AIM? Ugh... Damn AOL. I don't suppose Trillian comes with any of that stuff? If not, I may just switch to that.

Oh, it gets better, though. Spyware I can handle (mmmm, loverly network people), but AIM's audio ads will drive me to commit several hundred dollars' worth of computer lab damage.

that was fun, I just ran several different sweeps on my computer. -sigh- I just ran a sweep last week, yet I still managed to pick up a ton of cookies and annoying toolbars. I gotta stop surfing as much. :-?
