My two cents:

I don't know that I can say much about NES and SNES Final Fantasies, becasue I played them all in ROM form, and without a sound card. But I maintain that Chrono Trigger kicks all their asses.

FF7 was good, but I don't understand some people's rabid devotion.

I loved the way you could completely abuse the Card Mod ability in FF8 -- before the end of disc 1, you could have your HP maxed out, ridiculously high strength, and some of the best weapons.

I didn't much care for FF9's plot, and there was a disturbing lack of attractive male characters.

If FF10 hadn't been so linear, it would have been better -- but I still thought it was great. Great enough that I'm going to buy FFX-2, even if it looks like it's geared towards all the fanboys out there.

I'll probably mooch the Advent Children DVD off one of my friends or something...

Chrono trigger definitely kicked the snes era FF's @sses (who else saw the frog ending? lol). I never played chrono cross, heard it was good though (most reviews seemed to prefer it to FF9). Anyone play Tales of Phantasia for the snes? That was a pretty cool game, but I never got to finish it. 7 is still my favorite, although I don't consider myself rabid. It just had the closest link to the earlier ones, and you could play through it more than once and not get sick of it... I could start a new game right now, and easily and happily work my way through it without getting bored... I tried with 8, but I couldn't bring myself to finish it again, even though it is shorter than 7. 10 I never tried, it's just so linear, plus I still have a few things I haven't finished (Omega, I'm lazy!).

I guess I could be considered rabid when it comes to 7, but no more so than for any other game I like. I have several favorites...it's not just one game, and I'm not about to say that everything else sucked.

But, 7 did have the best villain of the newer FFs. I mean, who knew polygons could stalk across the screen like that? The problem is that many of the ones after it just didn't have villains. 8 was the closest with the sorceresses. In 9, Kuja was petulent, but he wasn't really a villain. 10...well, Seymore just was kind of in the way. Yu Yevon only showed up at the end...Sin wasn't really evil. Yeah.

As far as heroes, I liked Cloud (though I still wanted to smack him sometimes), Zidane (he's not angsty, he's compitent, has a sense of humor, doesn't need to be smacked...wow! Who knew?), and Tidus (a twit, but a likeable twit).

And the female leads? Yuna was the best. She was a strong female lead, but not in that "Arrr, I'm so tough because I'm an amazon warrior!" sense. She had personality, she planned, she had ideas and thoughts, and she was every bit as much the main character of FFX as Tidus was. Being a female gamer, it's really hard to find any woman in a video game that you can actually identify with. Just below her was Aeris (sniff) and Tifa. I liked them both. I just don't like how Tifa was designed. There was more too her than just bouncing, but it's often ignored. Let's see...both Dagger and Rinoa were just kinda there. I mean really, they didn't show much personality either way. Especially Dagger.

Plot. I really liked 7's plot, and I really liked 10's plot. 7 because it set the pace and was very original at the time, and 10 because it's STILL original. Yes, it's very linear, but it's also very deep. They created an entire culture and religious system! And...well, it took some unexpected turns. 9 didn't really have much of a plot at all, and I admit that. It was just sort of there to be fun. The ending was very random. Hated 8's plot for reasons I've mentioned before this.;)

Chrono Trigger DID rock...although, I hear FF6 is very good. I'll just have to play it and find out. I found Chrono Cross to be far too depressing, though. Loved the music, but it seemed like you doomed someone no matter what path you took in that game.

So, yeah, how 'bout those obscenely long posts? ;)

Soo, I just stumbled on this sight off of Penny Arcade. And I noticed that they had the full FF7:Advent Children trailer up. And it's not like someone snuck a camera in or anything. It's got subtitles. Aaaaand...it's got One Winged Angel playing in the background. I'm sold.

YES! Finally a trailer with subtitles! Yeah, I can't wait for AC to come out. Hopefully the rumors that Aeris will come back is true. I just hated it when she died    .

I first parsed this as "Advent Chicken". Might take the series in a whole new direction.

(Or maybe not; my knowledge of such games is... slight.)
