My sites been down for going on 6 weeks now

Post by Shane B. »

Uh, yeah. I've tried not to complain too much, but my site has been down a really, really long time. I mean, like, weeks on end and all. I was hoping that this whole DNS or whatever problem would have blown over by now, so I kept drawing my comic. I've got Christams specials planned and everything, and if I can't get into my comic soon the whole continuity thing will get screwed up. My comic is Elijah and Azuu of elijahandazuu.keenspace.com and I can't get into it in any way. No FTP, no HTTP, nothing. I can "update" it in the members section, but so far that hasn't done anything.

Im with you on that.

I just checked out http://www.netfirms.com. They give out free websites that support cgi. I'm coupling the site with movable type in the hopes that I can replicate what I use keenspace for. I know it's a lot of work, but at least you can have a dependable space while keenspace is out.

yeah, I was looking at netfirms too (for a different reason) but there's a registration fee for the domain name, so it's 45$ which isn't bad, but isn't great; there are also some other conditions that you have to meet. as far as getting the site itself working, I'm sorry, i have no idea what's really going on except that the admins are scrambling around madly trying to fix everything ;P

Oh well. I'll just wait it out like the rest of us, I guess. And by the way, I checked my "records" (i.e.: I thought about it a little more) and realized that it's been closer to 4 weeks. Still, my comic is daily and that's 28 lost strips. Good luck getting this mess fixed.

>.< ouch I know what you mean. I only update once a week and mine has been down a couple now. I figure there's a lot of these problems with the last batch of comics especially (durn it that includes mine which has only been around since mid-late September)

I remember being able to log into the ftp for both old and new server so not sure what's going on to be honest. I think the techies are working on a slew of other problems right now (prolly on the paid accounts) so I'm being patient since after all it's a free service :)

http://rillystar.keenspace.com is mine, but I've mirrored it for now at http://rillystar.topcities.com

Yeah, sometimes life sucks. I'm just waiting for an e-mail to come along and say "everything's fixed, please move your data to the following address..." or something like that. If any tech guys read this, please promise me you'll send me a VERY detailed letter on how to get my site working again as soon as the problem is fixed.

so I set up my netfirms

Post by Skeane »

So I set up my netfirms account today.

I'm still working on some of the archiving stuff through movable type.

Here are the plusses
- I've had a temporary account set up there for about a week now. It's never been down when I checked it.
- It supports cgi.
- It supports movable type.
- They provide a totally free hosting package (you pay extra if you want domain hosting)
- Its got upgrade packages at reasonable rates.

Here are the minuses.
- There's a limit to the amount of cgi-transactions you can do on the free account. Once you reach it, Netfirms disables the cgi entries on your account for 24 hours. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but when I'm working with movable type to set up template pages and tweak .css as well as post archives, one quickly runs out of cgi-space.
- you don't get the community thing that you'd get from keenspace.
- I think I'm going to consider using this site while my keenspace account is down and maybe hang on to it as a mirror site once things are up.
