Aid my search for a French Comic

Post by Melancholy Chinese »

This might be a question for the older members of the forum, but I'm looking for leads on an old French comic I read once way back when I was a toddler. It was stuck amidst the hardcover comics collection in the French embassy, along with Tintin, Asterix, and numerous others I've forgotten, but the one detail that sticks in my mind is the antagonist who literally had a broomhandle for a head.

Well, I'm not sure if it actually was a broom handle, but his head was a knobbed stick of wood with little beady eyes and a toothy evil grin. And he wore a cape, cloak, I don't remember if the rest of his body was wood as well. It was done in the European style, with wonderfully subtle flat coloring, linework, and detail, and it wasn't a children's book either. The protagonist was a redhaired freckled woman and her grandfather. The setting was definitely fantasy, and I didn't understand the plot because it was, afterall, in French.

Any leads would be appreciated.

This could be "La Quete a'l Oiseau de temps" - Quest for the Timebird, by Loisel and Letendre. The third volume (The Hunter) has an antagonist who looks a bit like you described. I used to have the series, but I sold my copies a few years ago, so I'm going by memory.

Yes, that's the one! I did a search for the Time Bird and I remembered the hunting scene with the blue creature and the bird-monsters.

Thank you very much for your help. :)

I didn't know the answer, but I just want to bump this thread because French comics rule.

Cool stuff.

Okay, I've got another comic, if anyone's up for another guess. Also in the French embassy was a science fiction comic based on the time-travelling adventures of two space-suit wearing aliens who travelled in their bullet-shaped spaceship.

I think in the end the two bought it from a tribe of neanderthals/primitive humans.

Did the aliens spend most of their time shooting at anything that moved for no good reason at all? It might be a comic by Lewis Trondheim, the name of which I can't remember.

Unfortunately, I don't remember much else about the comic. But thanks for keeping it on your mind that long. Vroom.
