Translations

Post by RHJunior »

Hi.
I'm looking into creating an alternative site or sites of my strips... (Nip and Tuck, Under the Lemon Tree, and Tales of the Questor)... in other languages (spanish, japanese, german, etc)....

Now, I'm trying to figure out how to set up the sites to accommodate....

I *could* set up mirror sites for each series.... but the strips are going to be translated in a couple of languages, so that's a new site, per language, per series.... a LOT of trouble and fuss (and bandwidth.) I'm not certain the Keenspace admins would be too keen on hosting 3 to 9 "new" sites that are nothing but translations of 3 preexisting old ones.

On the other hand, dedicated sites in new languages would generate a LOT of new traffic-- and resulting ad revenue. And in whole new market areas, as well.... which is something both the admins and I want. (If I can find an english-to-japanese translator somewhere, I'd bet even money on getting a fanbase in Nippon. Nip and Tuck's ratings would go totally batshit.)

I thought I'd air this idea out here FIRST, instead of just applying for more Keenspace sites, and possibly getting the admins honked at me.... And maybe getting an idea or three on how to streamline the whole potential mess.

Thoughts from the Admins, please?

I'm not an admin, but last I checked, there's no easy way of running multiple comics from a single site.

Check out Altavista for japanese-english:

Yes you can, but it will display ALL the comics in ALL the languages. I belive there's a way around it but it requires special work.

True, I could just put all the translations on a single page... but they'd all display at the same time which would slow down the page, and annoy the readers I was trying to attract....
I may simply have to get extra websites--probably with other servers, if the Keenspace admins object to them-- to host the translated strips....

I really suggest finding professional translation over babelfish. I've found that when translating a videogame site, one Fire Emblem game was called "The Overlord of the Coconut." And special moves such as "Super green paste sliding."
Is this comic ANTI-AMERICAN? You make the call: http://finaldraft.keenspace.com, Final Draft (Mature Audiences only)

Believe it or not... but there is actually support for multiple comics on one site...

However the problem is that it's something only Gav can set-up at the moment. Essentially getting more sites is the "easy" way to do it. However there is another possibility...

You can do something along the lines of "translate this into..." and have a script process the current link to redirect to the translated page/comic.

So 20020925 would goto the 20020925 page of whatever selected language.

You could also manually do it, since I think you have a fair bit of manual effort if you are translating the comic itself, in which case just making a new directory for each language version should do (and respective /d and /comics)

Am I making any sense?

Okay, so basically you're saying I could ask Gav to set up a sort of "sub-page" or rather sub-file for the translated strips, with a link on the main page??
