Hiya folks! Dave here. I just usually drop in to see where the older members are now(Keenspot seems like the trend) and see if there are any new faces. A quick look at the list tells me there's about 500 comics on here... YEOWZA! But like half of the are either abandoned or were never even touched.
Recently I've decided to re-start my old comic (twentyfour n' a half Water St.) but I'm debating whether to come back here or to go it alone and start up on some freebie site until I can find the funds for something better(damn student-ness ringin' me dry). Here's where I ask for your help 'Spacers. Is it worth my while to come back here to KeenSpace. Or handle it by myself.
Keep in mind the good n' the bad of both. In Keenspace I get free...everything really. But I'm just another face in a crowd of 500 comics so I have to rely on word of mouth to get anyone to my site. Or on some freebie site I have to setup my archives, updates, advertising, everything. But I'm not squished into a whole mass of dead comics and stereotyped as being another Keenspace comic(no offence but I've heard it mentioned that way).
Well... what do you think 'Spacers? Tell me!...please

Since I just setup my site myself, I'm hardly an expert on how this place runs. However, it seems to me that the only real associations that Keenspace forces on you are the webaddress (which I believe can be customized if you have your own domain registered) and the advertising. Almost any free webhosting site you sign up for is going to require advertising of some nature, and from my experience I find Keenspace's adds a lot less obtrusive than those required by many other sites. Plus there's the added perk that they have at least a marginal chance of being relevant to your readers.
As far as promotion of your comic goes, it seems to me that you would have to put in the same amount of work wherever you post your comic. Keenspace gives you access to a few additional promotional options, but if you want your comic to be successful you'll still have to do all the work you'd do if hosted on another free site. (One of 3000 Keenspace comics or one of 50,000+ comics on the web in general (most of which are dead), not much of a difference).
Basically, since you're looking for a free webhosting, I don't really think you could do better than Keenspace.

Hey Dave.
A few weeks ago I was trying to decide on exactly the same thing. Hey, I could spend what little salary I have to spare on web space and get 20 billion MB at my feet. And a nice domain too! Of course... Who's going to fill up 20 billion MB? I don't feel like spending 10 bucks on a .com domain. Per month.
But then again, Keenspace is free. FREEEE. And it has a great community, when the forums are up occasionally.
I say, stay here. If your comic doesn't jump out at first, work on it. If it does, you'll be off to Keenspot where it will be a whole lot HARDER to jump out! It's all a practical joke on us, the cartoonists.

This has been tried.. not just once but by many. I gave it a go when I and keen both started, but the ammount of comics that were being added so quickly made it difficult. Not only do you have to make sure they're some how catergorized, but often comics on keen are short lived so all the sites have to be routinely checked for deadness. Fortunately the new keenlist tells when the last time the comic updated, this is really their one responce for the people's request to some how take care of the "ghost site" problems.sss wrote:Yuck that's awful! Maybe somebody could try to set up a list of all the living sites...
And welcome back twentyfour.. hey i remembe you/your comic
Don't ask my opinion on keen on a keenspace board
